Hey guys, it's been a while, but I think I've found the engine I'm looking for. I've been offered an 81 Cougar with a 200. Now that came with 88 hp, with all the emissions stuff on it. Any thoughts on what effect there might be in removing all the emissions stuff? Probably not much, but any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Howdy Jim:

Do a search for posts by Mark P. He's been down this road with his Fairmont. You might do some other searches on late model sixes.

What are the emissions laws like in Canada? Better check on that too before you start removing stuff. EPA laws can be a stickler down here, depending where you're at.

What trannie do you have. The Cougars are like the T-Birds of that year, right?

Adios, David

Thanks for the tips, guys. Emissions laws in Alberta are non-exisitent. Other parts of the country have much tighter rules, but since Alberta is a province whose prime source of revenue is oil, other fossil fuels, and ranching, we tend to have conservative governments that don't favour a lot of legislation. Good thing too, since I don't believe any car I've ever owned would pass an emissions test.

Overall this is going to be a good deal for me. I'm getting the car for $50 CDN, and I'll be pulling the engine, trans, rear end, and some interior bits.

It'll all be going into my LTD, and my friends will be harassing me for not doing yet another V8. Whooooo!

So, while I've got your attention, something has come to my attention, and that would be a tranny problem. I've just learned that the trans in the car has no reverse, so I'll be replacing it.

I've been reading up on some of the performance mods and such, and one of the articles covered modifying a V8 trans to work with the post 1980 engine. What I'm wondering is what trans exactly was used behind these late I6s.

Can I make the simple assumption that I can pull one out of just about any 80-83 Fox chassis car with the I6, or are there other options. Other options would be good, since I6 powered cars are getting very rare in the wrecking yards around here. Any 4 bangers with the correct pattern? V6s maybe?

Thanks again,
Jim

Updated yet again....

Bought the car today for $50. The engine runs well, although there is a little lifter noise. Bottom end is quiet. Bonus: I'm pulling TONS of stuff off this car before I scrap it. There's good trim, underhood and underbody bits.

I researched more, and found out that the C4 has the removable bellhousing. Very handy!

you've probably read about modifying the bellhousing to accept a T5 transmission
there are some 200s that have a pattern that is just shy of being the same as a SBF trans, check the tech section for more info
