I am thinking of starting a turbo project, and need to know if the 2.3 turbo will be enough for our 200's.

I don't want to go to crazy but I think it won't be big enough to make a difference, am I right?

thanks,

mike

The general consensus is that it will not operate in it's efficient range on a 200. Just not enough air getting compressed.

The answer really depends on what you wish to accomplish by adding the turbo. If your plans include any significant amount of drag racing, the 2.3's turbo is too small, as it will run out of air at the big end. OTOH, if you are really just looking for some better low-to-mid-RPM grunt for street driving, then this can be a good choice, as a 2.3 turbo will come onto boost at seriously low RPMs on a 200 (like at just off idle).

Keeping in mind that the 200 Mustangs were intended as mid-mannered grocery getters and commuter cars, they usually came with low ratio rear ends and therefore lacked sparling performance. The usual remedy was to drop in a 289 (or later a five-oh). However, a turbo that comes onto boost quickly can totally revise your car and the pleasure you get out of driving it. I never really appreciated this until I bought my wife a turbocharged diesel VW Golf. Unlike the 1.8 turbcharged gasoline powered Golfs, the diesel's boost comes on right off idle, so the car pulls like a freight train from very low RPMs, and is a kick in the pants to drive.

If this is your goal, then the 2.3 turbo might be a good choice. Just be realistic about its power potential. A healthy 289/302 will blow its doors off at the big end...

importkiller is have great luck with a 2.3L turbo (well a GN unit but the same specs)

I got an extra T3 I am looking to get rid of...

more or less just looking for something fun for the car a little drag 1/8 mile but mostly street running and really just want it to worry the v8 guys.

I appreciate all the responses.

I have a guy not to far from me that converted his 84 2.3 turbo mustang to a 302 and still has all the stuff.

he's getting me a 2bbl holley/with clifford adaptor and a 2.3 turbo and several other parts to make it work. hopefully I'll find a way to use the innercooler for it and help myself out.

I have import killers thread about parts list bookmarked and refer to it but still learning about these cars and need lots of advice.

thanks,
mike

First, you should know that all 2.3L turbos are not the same. They had different compressor and turbine housings for different models. Most had a .60 A/R compressor and a turbine in the .43 A/R range. The SVOs had a larger turbine and a Super 60 compressor IIRC

Either one will be fine, with the larger version giving better top end. Everyone says they are too small, but has anyone seen one NOT work???

all 2.3L t3's had a standard .60 trim compressor. svo's were the only ones with a round outlet....the others had a flanged outlet (simple two bolt deal) early and late auto cars had the .48 turbine while the later stick cars got teh .63 turbine. 87-88 tbirds had a ihi which is junk
