accel pump

my brother in law is working on his carb..when mine didn't work right i got one from pony carbs...so i really still don't know how they work.. we put a new diaphram in and it's still not pumping gas into the carb when we get ready for a cold start, he can spray a little starting fluid in the carb and it starts right up and runs great from then on...someone said it's probably the accel pump not getting fuel to the carb!!!! ARE THOSE EASY TO CHANGE?? ANYONE HAVE PICTURES OR STEPS??? should he just get the whole thing rebuilt or order one from advance or autozone????

An Auto parts store will carry carbs and they will be the best price. Supposedly Pony Carbs come better tuned. Is that really true? I can't say.

As for the accelerator pump, that's not your problem. If it was bad, it wouldn't run correctly even after the starting fluid. They are easy to change however. You have to buy the whole rebuild kit just to get the pump which kinda sucks. I have a 1100, 1101 rebuild kit I don't need, brand new. If you need it, shoot me an e-mail and I'll make ya a deal.

if not accel pump??? what else would cause it to not want to start cold, with out a little starting fluid or gas in the carb....any other time it is great, just when cold??? what to check???

Just wondering how often the car gets driven? Is it a daily driver, or has it been sitting?

My car runs real rough when starting cold, but I know in my case it's a problem with the fast idle cam not want to set itself. Not sure about your carb but on mine there is a linkage from the cam to the choke plate that needs to be meaured and adjusted by bending. And I need a new vacuum pull-off. Anybody know where I can get one? Holley 1946.

Is your choke setting itself when you put the pedal to the floor to set the it before starting. Does the choke plate close(almost)?

rookie at this...i'll check to see if it's closing almost(choke).... but we haven't driven it yet at all...still in the working stage....just trying to get it to run well before it gets on the road...we only get a chance to work on it every few days...so we try and start it and let it run and go up and down the driveway a little bit....

Jeffrey, there is a check ball just below the top cover of the carburetor, just above the accerator pump area.

Most inexperienced individuals remove the top air horn, turn the carb upside down & not put this check ball back into the main body of the carb.

Don't know what the weather is like in your area, but I have had a problem with condensation, and water in my gas. Perhaps the conditions in your situation might be right for creating condensation in the log.

we have checked the carb out, when we pump accel, no gas and not setting choke either.... probably needs definite rebuild....what can i adjust to get the choke to start closing the way it should....if i move the accel. it moves a little but then i can move it better with my hand to close like it should, don't really see where i can adjust it to close with just the accel.!! will the rebuild fix this problem as well??????

check the choke...it could be tooo rich

If you know that there is gas in the carb and you move the throtal linkage while looking down inside the carb there should be a shot of gas go in the carb. If not then there eather is no gas in the carb of the accelerator pump is shot (not working) the shot of gas is needed to start the motor. Durning the cranking of the motor to start it there is not enough vacuum to pull gas throu the carb thats why the shot of gas is needed as well as the choke..
If you move the throtal linkage when the motor is cold the choke should set ( go almost closed with in a 1/8 or so of compleetly shut).. If not to adjust it there is three screws in the choke housing (on the outside of the carb and I beleve it is black in color). with the motor off loosen (do not remove) the three screws and you should be able to turn the black housing just go a little at a time. There maybe some notiches or marks about 3/16 or so apart and maybe marked rich - lean. If not enough choke the go to the rich side only one mark at a time then test..
