Sounds like fuel starvation (with no further info, anyway).
Check (replace) the fuel filter first. Then, check the fuel PRESSURE, with a guage - borrow one or buy one: they're cheap. Ford says the pressure should be 4-6 PSI at the carb when idling.
Also, check for an old, cracked fuel line between the fuel pump and the gas tank. If there is a slight leak in the rubber parts of this line, it won't leak fuel when sitting, but it will "suck air" when the fuel pump is running - this causes fuel starving, too.
Last, the filter in the gas tank itself could be clogged. This often happens on cars that have been sitting for a long time. Without removing the tank, there's an easy way to check this:
1. Remove the gas cap.
2. Remove the fuel line where it enters the fuel pump, on the tank side.
3. Blow into the fuel line (your lungs are enough pressure) to blow the fuel back into the gas tank. This will knock some of the rust and dirt off of the filter inside of the tank, if this is the problem.
4. Put it all back together and see if it helped.
My Fairmont had this tank problem when I bought it: it had been sitting for 3 years. Eventually, I got a good pump and sucked all the rust and dirt out from the gas filler side, which finally fixed it permanently.
There are other things that can cause the symptoms you describe, like severely retarded timing, weak spark or a vacuum leak in one of the smog controls or in the vacuum reservoir.
