hey, my 250 has plenty of power at the beginning of the pedal but then dies out as i increase pressure. just recently it started cutting out completely and sputtering and popping a bit. any ideas?

How long have you had the car? Has it always had problems of this sort?

We need some more background information in order to best diagnose the problem. Fill us in; someone will likely jump up with a good suggestion.

Cheers, Adam.

i've had the car for about a month. i've always thought that it was a little weak through the middle of the throttle relative to where it is a bit the beginning, but lately it has become much worse. it seems to lose power when i step into it and gain power again as i back off. the more recent development (the sputtering and popping) follows the same progression but is obviously much worse... does that help any?

sounds like he is losing compression when he jumps on it...what would cause that?

could it be a timing issue? or is that a blown gasket?

dont get worried, I am just trying to talk it out and figure it out. I am BY NO MEANS an authority

have you done any of the "checks"? pull the plugs...what do they look like? check compression...

do you have original points? is it stock or are there upgrades?

Either the accelerator pump is not functioning properly (if this is the case, it may be brought up gently to speed, but not "blipped" without dying), or the ignition advance is out of whack.

Have you checked your initial timing with the vacuum plugged, and also the advance mechanism's effectiveness?

Adam.

Sounds like it was a problem that was there in the beginning but has gotten worse. First thing I would do is pull the plugs and see what they look like. If for some reason you have a rich or lean condition at 1/2 or more throttle over time the plugs will get worse and worse until you start to experience what your going through right know. First pull the plugs and replace them even if they don't look that bad.

Then start looking the carb and the fuel enrichment systems for your application (holley, weber, etc....). It sounds like you may have issues with accelator pumps or other enrichment systems like a holley power valve etc...

Sounds like fuel starvation (with no further info, anyway).
Check (replace) the fuel filter first. Then, check the fuel PRESSURE, with a guage - borrow one or buy one: they're cheap. Ford says the pressure should be 4-6 PSI at the carb when idling.
Also, check for an old, cracked fuel line between the fuel pump and the gas tank. If there is a slight leak in the rubber parts of this line, it won't leak fuel when sitting, but it will "suck air" when the fuel pump is running - this causes fuel starving, too.

Last, the filter in the gas tank itself could be clogged. This often happens on cars that have been sitting for a long time. Without removing the tank, there's an easy way to check this:
1. Remove the gas cap.
2. Remove the fuel line where it enters the fuel pump, on the tank side.
3. Blow into the fuel line (your lungs are enough pressure) to blow the fuel back into the gas tank. This will knock some of the rust and dirt off of the filter inside of the tank, if this is the problem.
4. Put it all back together and see if it helped.

My Fairmont had this tank problem when I bought it: it had been sitting for 3 years. Eventually, I got a good pump and sucked all the rust and dirt out from the gas filler side, which finally fixed it permanently.

There are other things that can cause the symptoms you describe, like severely retarded timing, weak spark or a vacuum leak in one of the smog controls or in the vacuum reservoir.

thanks to everyone for all the help so far....when i first bought the car, i replaced plugs, cap and rotor, fuel filters, and all of the simple stuff. there were also a couple of vacuum hoses loose that i had to replace. i haven't messed around with anything like the carb, fuel pump, etc and that's all stock. i also have yet to check the timing. it sounds like i need to check that and the fuel delivery system right away....
