Air and Carbs

Howdy Curtis:

Is this a trick question? OK, I'll bite, How much air does a one barrel carb suck in at WOT?

Adios, David

Curtis, what kind of 1 barrels???? William

:D ok let me make this more clear. I want to see how much air a autolite 1100 1 bbl is sucking in. Well if there was a supercharger on the carb pumping out 8 pounds of boost its sucking inn 8 pounds of boost. What if you didnt have that supercharger, how much would it suck inn. I want to make a supercharger for my car without spending alot of money. I was thinking about the m90 but after reading a post on it, its turned me away from those type of superchargers. I dont see why Centrifugil superchargers cost so much. o well. if anyone has any ideas on superchargers let me know.

Curtis,

ALL carbs are rated for the amount of air that they flow at Wide Open Throttle (WOT). ALL carbs are rated in Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM). One and Two barrel carbs have a different pressure system than four barrel carbs. So a 500 cfm four barrel flows about 20% more air than a 500 cfm two barrel.

For the type of supercharger you are talking about, you'll need a 500 cfm two barrel or a 400 cfm four barrel.

An 1100 flows about 140 to 160 cfm depending on which one you have. Not nearly enough.

I hope you didn't take too much offense at the other fellows poking a little humor at your question - it is one of the problems of working late at night. "How much WOT would a WOTchuck chuck if a WOTchuck would ... Oh weel.

FInally, the word "CHEAP" and "BLOWER" can not be realistically used in the same sentence!

Howdy Curtis and All:

My apology too Curtis. I just couldn't resist.

To be exact the Autolite 1100 used on 200 engines from 1964 to 1967 were rated at 185 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). Califorina Emissions 200 in '66 & '67 are rated at 156 CFM.

This is not the carb for supercharger or turbo-charger applications. You will want a carb that is more easily tuned, more durable, and had a better power enrichment circuitry. For these reasons and more, I'd suggest that you look into the Holley #4412, two barrel rated at 500 CFM.

Pony Carbs handbook gives a lot of the stock carburetor ratings.
The 1100 had three different values depending on it host engine.
That's why it's such a crap shoot when you go to get a rebuilt carb at the automotive parts houses.
Especially for the years 63-64.
One local vendor lists the same number for the three moror sizes 144, 170 and 200.

CZLN6, no need for an apology. I would love to run a setup like mangooroo.sorry for mispell. I just have to keep my eyes open for a cheap blower and learn as much as possible on this subject.
