Where can you get a good air cleaner assembly that will fit the carter yf? Do they make an adapter so you can use one of em edlebrock ones at napa.

Try looking for an old granada, fairmont etc for the stock one, this may be your best bet. Those universal type aftermarket ones will work but you may run into hood clearance issues. I cut down the bottom piece of a granada air cleaner and used the chrome top from an edlebrock one for a pretty cool looking custom air cleaner.

thats what I had plans on doing but I have a 3 1/2 tall K&N on mine and now I have to use the hood as a air cleaner lid :?

I have an Edelbrock chrome air cleaner (10") with bottom of an old air cleaner base plate. I cut 2 inches off the outer edge of the old base plate making the diameter a little smaller than the edge of the Edelbrock unit. Then I cut the center part off the Edelbrock bottom unit and the whole thing gets held together by the wing nut to carb bolt.

The key is the fact that the perimeter of the air filter actually sits LOWER than the carb top, much like the edges of an umbrella are lower than the center. By removing the convex (rising) Edelbrock center portion of ther base and replacing with a concave (lowering) trimmed old air cleaner base, their is plenty of hood clearance.

Hope this helps - it looks really cool under the hood!

The problem with the carter YF is that the choke housing sticks up higher than the top of the carb making it almost impossible to mount a bottom plate without a spacer. Like Spike said if you find the stock air cleaner for the Carter YF it has a bump in it that goes over the choke housing keeping the air cleaner low. you could use that as your base and mount the K+N on that with a top. That would give you a lower air filter than if you used a spacer to clear the housing. Otherwise the Carter YFA is basically the same carb with the same housing sticking up but the base that holds the throttle plate is much shorter giving you about an inch more clearance than the Carter YF. The YFA came on later 200+250s,(maybe 1976 and later). Good luck.

I'll give away my secret... I'm running a Harley K&N on my single carb. Fit perfect, no mods at all and runs super. Tons of different models too.

My '86 Mustang had a Carter YF 1bbl on it, if you can find one it is a low profile aircleaner. Mine was stolen along with car, and radiator out of moms garage about 2 years ago.

What type of Harley air cleaner are you running? Is is from a Sportster, or a big twin?

It won't matter, they have the same diameter intake. I don't honestly know what mine came off of though. I saw it on ebay and it was a nice chrome design with a used K&N for a winning bid of only... $10.50! I love it. It's custom and inexpensive.
