Almost done, ran into problem

Well, I'm almost done. I got everything back together today. Took a minute but I got it started up, let it idle for a couple minutes, and put it in reverse. Soon as I did this, I noticed two things.

1) I put a donut on there, but there was already one on there. How in the world do I get that thing off? It is like welded/rusted on there :) I took a pry-bar to it, but don't have any leverage. I sprayed some "loosener" on there, but no luck yet. That was probably the smoke coming from the engine bay - the stuff burning. I tried just using the old one, but it didn't really work. Not sure why. Any suggestions?

2) When I put it in reverse, and backed up, or when I put it in drive, and increased to like 20 mph, I hear a "clanking." It is repetitive. The only way I know how to describe the rhythm of it is something my Dad told me once. He said they would tie Zip-ties to people's driveshafts, and when they took off, it would hit and go clunk clunk clunk with the turn. That's essentially what it sounded like. I thought maybe the brakes or something? I don't know where to start with that. Any ideas?

edit: Oh, and I put some tranny fluid in there, and it helped a tad, but it still does it. and another - It didn't do this in Park, just in Reverse and Drive

Other than that, the car ran GREAT in park :) and didn't die once. Well, it died when I put it in reverse and accidentally had the parking brake on  but none other than that

Are you taking about the donut between the exhaust manifold and the first hunk of pipe? Whatever was on my 66 when I bought it (not factory) had some sort of a built in donut on it. I didnt figure that out till I had it so mashed up that I couldnt use it anymore. I dont remember the details but I was sure it was a stuck on donut when I started trying to get it off. I ended up getting a whole new system since I knew I was going to need one soon anyway.

Since you were messing with exhaust check to make sure its not hitting the body or drive shaft somewhere. If the exhaust is touching any metal anywhere without the rubber part it could easily rattle.

Does the noise happen when you are sitting still and in gear?

Ha, why didn't I think of that. it may be on there for good, not a removable one like I had bought. So I wonder how I get it to flush mount...

I didn't think of that - could be the pipe hitting or something. No, from what I could tell, it only did it when I was speeding up (on a small residential street about 20 mph) and in reverse, going a few mph. Not sitting still in gear though.

check your u-joints, tranny and motor mounts (added stress will make it walk). Or pull your tranny pan and check for metal.

new_falcon_owner - I think you're right. I tightened the parking brake assembly a couple weeks ago, and I'd be willing to bet that the U-joint is hitting that bracket or bolt.

As far as the manifold - pipe thing goes. I got to thinking...What if the manifold has a different orientation - either it's at a different angle or something. Any ideas? Anyone bought a new one and had that happen? Thanks,

As far as the manifold being differnt I think I read that the EGR ones were longer or came off at a slightly differnt angle. I dont remember where I read that but it seems like you had to know after 67 which one you had.

This one looks like the same casting as the stock one - except where the pipe goes into it, the old one is torn up and hard to tell...Don't know anything about it having EGR. The problem is, the pipe is pretty stationary, and doesn't rotate, so it stinks if it is at an angle
