I need a new voltage regulator and the parts guy is asking weather I have a transistorized alternator or regular one,,so how do I tell or find out? 66 200 ci 6 popper nothing fancy

thanks for help/info

You could have either one. From the factory it would have been a 'regular' one. The transistor ones are 'modern' and like all modern things when they work they work better than the old stuff did but they can decide not to work without warning. The 'regular' ones will usually start acting up and giving you signs that they are in trouble. Pretty much the same thing as points vs. a duraspark except the regulators dont tend to wear as fast as points.

If it was me I would buy the transistor one unless it was a heck of a lot more money. They should be physically interchangeable as far as mounting and the plug so its up to you. If you have a 'show' car you would want to order one from one of the mustang places so it has the correct paint and stuff for your model and year but as far as function I dont think you are going to notice any difference.

Unless you have had it tested and know its bad I would try cleaning the connections (including the ground that is through the case via a mounting screw). It may solve your problem.

8) it is not the alternator that is transistorized, it is the regulator,a dn on fords it doesnt matter since the regulators are interchangable as long as you have an alternator. the alternator and generator used different regulators.

Get the Electronic Regulator, and put the Points Regulator cover on it to look original.
