ARGHHHHH! Cylinder head mix up

Ok Currently I am running a 1961 170 head on a 1968 200 block ,so I order a rebuilt head from a 1977 with a three angle valve job. And What do I get? A 66 head with a three angle valve job that has been milled .060.

I am only looking for a mild performance upgrade.

Do I return this head?

Do I install this head along with a carb upgrade, electronic ignition and exhaust upgrade ( Headers?)

Will an upgrade to the valve train be worthwhile?

What kind of valve train should I expext to find in the 170 head (Adjustable?)

Will these upgrades make this car more drivable in modern traffic?

Thanks Ed

I haven't done the math, but I'm guessing that milling the head that much might cause a fairly drastic increase in the engine's compression ratio. Make sure you know whether the resulting compression ratio will be compatible with the over all plan for the engine and also whether or not the octane rating of the fuel you'll need to prevent detonation with a head milled that much is something you're willing to buy. Perhaps somebody else here can give you some guidance with respect to these issues.

Then again...aren't replacement head gaskets thicker?, which is why you mill the heads to regain your compression ratio + some.
I'd sit down and do the math, which would involve cc'ing your chambers. You might not be that much higher than stock. As long as it's 9.5:1 or lower, it would run fine on pump gas.

.060 is a safe number to mill these heads. the new gaskets are thicker 0.25.

The older head also has the smaller intake bore for the carburetor, smaller valves, and not hardened for unleaded fuel. I vote return and get what you requested.

Yeah I slept on it and decided to return the thing. :bang: At the end of the day I want the project to turn out as planned

You did the right thing. Dean is correct.
