Aussie Head and 1.6 Rocker Assy.

Just curious if anyone is running this set up and if there were any issues? I have some rockers hitting the valve cover on mine. I saw it coming when I was buttoning it up because the cover would not sit flush on the head. I did some troubleshooting but before I go into that I wanted to see if it was something common that I'm missing.

No problems or no one has the 1.6 rocker assembly? :D

To clarify, I noticed #3's adjusters were up a bit higher than the others. Hmmmm :hmmm: Pulled push rods adjacent to #3 and compared, same length. Ok, pull the adjusters out, same length. Now how the heck did I get: 1. Different sized lifters AND 2. Get them on the same cylinder? Lucky bastidge I guess? I pulled the thing apart two or three times for ha-ha's before sealing it up to double check the work. I dont think its the rocker assy. or the valve cover (tried a different valve cover). The more I think about this the crazier it gets. I put the old rocker assembly back on and everything was hunky-dory. If the hydraulic lifters eat up the difference with the factory rockers, why not with the adjustable rockers?

PS I love this sh!t! Wife says I'm a sadist.

While I don't have the 1.6 rockers, I seem to remember this being an issue with original style valve covers. I think the aftermarket chrome and CI's VCs don't have the issue.

If you look at the difference in your rockers, you'll notice the 1.6 rockers are bulkier than the stock. Also, they travel further up and down than stock on the valve side due to the extra ratio. The side on the lifters has the same relative motion amplitude.

Slade,
Funny thing is its the aluminum cover that they hit on. I put the stocker on and its ok :bang: I dont know how to check the arms other than taking it apart and moving them to another cylinder. I really dont think thats the problem though. I'll dig more this weekend  Still hanging on to the 4BBl intake are ya? You'll get beeter mileage with the injection ;)

I think those 1.6 rockers are going to be a big hassle for you and you should just sell them to me for $100. Then, you won't have any more problems.

Ron, look inside the valve cover and see if the adjusters are hitting the buttons that were intended for baffle plates? That's usually the problem. If so, just use a 1/2" drill point bit and knock the buttons down a little. It's easier to do if you mark the button with a center punch first.

Slightly shorter pushrods may solve the problem as well. How long are your pushrods?

I know it doesn't help now, but I've been thinking about making a valve cover spacer (billet, alloy, or some type of plastic) that would raise the covers half an inch. Guess I need to get on it.....

That was exactly the problem I had when I switched from the stock non-adjustable rocker assembly to an adjustable assembly. The locking nuts were hitting those darn baffle buttons. Removed them and no more problem. :D

I'm going to work on this today after the "normal" chores are done. I'll bet that is exactly whats happening but I won't know until I pull the valve cover.

Vinny, NO! on the rocker assembly. Now if you were willing to trade for that nice fastback you had we might be able to come to a deal ;)

I'll fill you all in when I'm done.
