Autolite 1100 - Rebuildable? Leaks gas at Throttle shaft

Hello,

I was planning on rebuilding my autolite 1100, 1 barrel carb on my 67 mustang. I noticed that when I operate the throttle shaft by hand (under the hood carb is still on car) and squirt gas into the carb it leaks gas out of where the throttle shaft goes into the carb. It does not feel loose but it does leak a few drops of gas.

I don't want to spend the time rebuilding this one if it is shot? What do you think? Also, the car is running rich and stalling out occasionally. Could this leak be my problem? I was going to rebuild the carb so it will hopefully stop this problem. I have checked or replaced everything else...

P.S. I want to buy the new autolite from Pony carbs but there not ready yet and way expensive too!

I may able to get ya one for the price of shipping here in a few days if ya need.

Thanks! I'm not sure if I need one though.

Does the leaking throttle shaft make this one no good?

I think pony actually puts a bushing in these. Seems like the had an article about it in a mag.

There is a throttle shaft bushing inside that gets worn out over the years and it will eventually leak. I have bought rebuilt carbs from autozone, pepboys and discount number one none of them are put together correctly and dont run right or leak gas like a sieve. Number two a rebuild kit wont bring the new bushing you can contact pony as they are the best for rebuilding the 1bbl.If your arent completely sold on the 1100 and your dizzy isnt a load o matic then you can convert to a carter yf, carter rbs or any larger 1bbl that doesnt have the scv that the 1100 does. You could even try a 2bbl which is the best for performance and driveability IMO. If your dizzy is a load o then it will only work with the 1100 and should be changed anyway because its a bad dizzy design its identifiable by taking the cap and rotor off if springs are visible then you have a load o matic if plates are visible you have a normal dizzy. Start by reading the sticky for the load o matic at the stop of the page.

You need to get the leaking shaft taken care of one way or another or you will not get a satisfactory rebuild out of it. My recomendation, FWIW, would be to find a local carb rebuilder and exchange it. Do not deal with the Big Box Stores, as I have heard so many horror stories about some of the 'rebuilt' stuff they send out. Or bite the bullet and go with Pony, at least you will get a good product.

Thanks for the info.

I don't think I would have much luck re-bushing myself. Sounds like a pain! + the where the fuel filter screws in is stripped. I think it is done.

I called Pony Carbs today. They say the brand new reproduction 1100 carb will be ready in about 3 weeks. $399.00. I may just go that way. A rebuild from the box stores is going to be $160.00 anyways. Then who knows what you get? It's a lot of money but probabley worth it for brand new. They also say it is an improved internal design.

I do have the load o matic (scv) that needs to match with the carb. I think I can continue to use that for now and eventually block the vacumm port if I upgrade the distributor later? I have a rebuilt distributor.

I hope the new 1100 is a good one. Looks like I will be the guinea pig?

lastly, could I do a 2 barrel swap for $400? If so, I may be tempted. Although I have read up on this a bit and it looks like there are air cleaner issues etc.

This car is 100% original (besides dual header + hot cam) so I'm tempted to keep it that way. I think the older it gets the more value it will have as original?

You could do a 2bbl swap for under 400 dollars no dought. These six bangers dont go up in value. Plus with headers and a "hot cam" a bigger carb is gonna = more horsepower.

If you put the Pony 1100 on there, it isnt original.

The thought of spending 400$ on a 1bbl carb makes me want to puke, especially seeing how easy they are to rebuild (and I don't mind spending money, either)

re-busing the carb is trivial with a drill press.

Hmmmmm. What to do?

Ok, where do I get the new bushing? Although I don't have a drill press. I think a friend may.

I know this has been asked a bunch but...What 2 barrel is the best, and easiest swap? I would then need to upgrade the distributor also?

Thanks!

The best is a subjective. None have a SCV so you will need to upgrade to a non LOM dist (adding to cost, but a really good idea in general)

You need to measure your throttle shaft, and pick a bushing that has the same ID as your throttle shafts OD.

It will depend based on how worn it is. I used bushings that were slightly undersized and then used valve grinding compound to lap the shaft in. REALLY good fit.

mcmaster.com has a decent selection of bushings.

Where do you live?? i just rebuilt my auto 1100 for my 66 f100... i spent 25 for the rebuild kit and 25 to have the new bushings put in. could be worth it to have it re bushed. i had the inlet fitting stipped out too... i tapped it 1/4 npt and used an adaptor.. good as new now.. one major thing i did was flatten out all the gasket mating surfaces. and i used a torque wrench to tighten all the screws. i usually use the "good nuff torque".

Hello,

Who did you have do the re-bushing? Is it something a machine shop would do? I'm in the Bay area California.

Everything is expensive here! My favorite bar charges $5.75 for a Corona!! Yes, that is one Corona....Yikes....

the fellow i had do this has been rebuilding and tuning carbs for the last 30 years or so. he did a really nice job. it is a machine shop job, unless you have a good drill press, can't be sloppy. i can give you his number, but i don't know what shipping would be......

Any good carb shop will have access to bushings. That is their business. But if you have other issues such as the stripped inlet, you may want to look for something else. I have an aftermarket Holley available if you are interested. It is in excellent conditon and has the correct bore and mount spacing.

I'm in Santa Cruz...

Not sure what to do at this point my current carb has three problems.

1) throttle shaft leaks gas. Needs re-bushing
2) Where fuel filter screws in is stripped
3) One of the screws that holds the choke cap on is stripped

I was looking at the 2 barrel swap but don't like the sideways mounting. That is the only way to get it on there without doing cable linkage and all. Don't want to start butchering the car it is all original.

The brand new Pony Carb is starting to look good again. I know many of you feel this is a poor choice. But....$400...brand new 1100 with improved design. Probabley never need to touch the carb again. I was happy with the car when my 1100 was perfoming well. It's a weekend driver and I really don't need to race anyone!

I could buy another used carb + rebuild + re-bush. I would actually like to find a good carb that some one took off for v8 conversion. Maybe possible. I can drive the car now. It dies sometimes though....crap
