Autolite 1100 woes

The Autolite 1100 is running horrible after two rebuilds and I'm fed up with it. It will not idle without turning the mixture screw counterclockwise/out all the way. So its running really rich from the get go, not to mention with plenty of hesitations, flat spots, and dying. Sometimes after about 20 minutes of idling in the driveway it runs fairly smooth, but most of the time it requires the manual choke.

My budget, time, and *cough* limited knowledge is leaning towards direct bolt on replacements. I've heard good things about Carter YF and Carter RBS, even the Holley 1946 and I'm looking for about 150-200 CFM. Or should I give Pony Carburetors a shot on the Autolite 1100? Again, I know just enough to be dangerous. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jon

I hear you brother - its 1:30am here and i've just about gone mental trying to get my autolite running as well. I can't believe something so simple could cause me so much grief. The carby kit did fix idle problems, but it bucks and farts past that. Take a long hard look at the throttle linkage and make sure it will work on the replacement. The pivot point off the vacum tee is only good for 'pushing up', if you need it to 'pull down' you have to tool around making adaptors [groan.....]

In the end i've used a stromberg single barrell i have from an old xa facon just so i can start the bloody thing and turn it around to pull out the 200 and put in an 4.1efi.

searching the posts now on how to cut the ecu& wiring from donor and had a laugh when i saw your post........

cheers

An old mechanics' saying is that when you think the problem is ignition, it's probably carburetion, and a vice-versa. Try advancing the timing a few degrees at a time, and see what happens.

Hi Jon,

The 1100 is capable of being a great carb, replacing it with a non standard carb will just open up more possibilities for more troubles.

Make sure your distributor is alright first. Now that you've rebuilt the 1100, have a look at the distributor. Are the advance springs ok? Does the diaphram have a hole? Is the distributor vacuum line leaking?

There is a lot more to tuning than just the carb, so I'd suggest getting what you have working before you begin looking into after market upgrades.

Thank you for the advice gentlemen, I greatly appreciate it.

Success! Readjusted the carb with a vacuum gauge (more by ear) and noticed a slight exhaust leak near the headers. Buttoned her up and she ran better than a top. I think initially my curb idle speed was too low, but the exhaust leak wasn’t helping either. Thanks for your help guys.

You don't mention if you have electronic ignition. If not, that's your next step; either Pertronix I or the Duraspark. If you stay with the 1100, I'd suggest the Pertronix plus Flamethrower coil. For about $100, you can forget about points, improve mileage, and improve response. :D

Pertronix has been on my list for 4-5 years, but every time I get ready to add it, something else takes priority over it

With $3 gas and the cost of points and condensers, it will pay for itself in, maybe 10 years. Seriously, it will improve mileage, improve starting, and reduce stumbling/hesitation. Not to mention not having to set the points again.

I have a $20 off promotion with Summit, so the Ignitor kit w/ coil was only $80.00 :D
