I changed the starter in my car b/c it wasn't disengaging and while doing so I changed the starting selenoid and the wire between the starter and the selenoid. But the rebuilt starter still grinds against the flywheel. Is there something I am missing? I have already changed the starter 2x. :bang:

grinds when it's engaging?
you might need to put in a shim or two to get the space, it might be too close to the flywheel
i know i had to do it to the El, and when i picked up the shims i saw Ford starter shims as well

I'm no help. Aussie stuff I use has 157 or 160 teeth flywheels, and starters which differ form US cars.

Chevies use a 5/32 wire test, if I recal properly, for seting starter position. Very simple to adjust. Shove a wire between the teath, and shim till it fits snug.

With Fords little I6's, I believe they went to adjustmnet on the starter bush itself. I'd pull the inspection cover, and shine a light, shove it in neutral, and have someone turn the engine with a shifter or ~3/4 socket anti clockwise so you don't loosen the balancer pully. If the teeth are crazed, then its a flywheel/flexplate change. There could be run-out in the flywheel, or you could have the wrong starter.

I rembember doing a wheel bearing in an Austin America. Put it in backwards. Beacuse the previous owner put his new wheel bearing in backwards. Check the part number for the year, and see if theres a mismatch. Sixes have a few different flywheel sizes, with dirrent teeth counts, altough the pitch remains similar.

I tried to shim it but then it would just spin w/o touching the flywheel. BTW its for a bent 8 (302). I like to post here b/c you guys are one the nicest and most knowledgable people on the web.

That's okay. We don't feel like were missing the family jewls when some comes in with 2 extra cubes and 2 extra cylinders!

The 240-300 Big Six boys are the ones to help. 302's are just like the big sixes at the bellhousing. Plenty of them are unrepentant V8 freeks as well as six cylinder drivers!

You'll possibly find some mysterious force, roumered to be a Moderator, will shift this post like magic from the 144-250 page to the 240-300 page.

I've even had them fix spelling mistakes, change font size, all that kinda stuff. Yeah, sure. Who's off with the fairies now?

We haven't invented a moderator who can run out and fix your 302 starter, but were working on it!

If it is grinding against the flywheel when you try to start it, you probably have the wrong starter - make sure they gave you the right one for your tranny (automatic or manuel - the bendix gear is different size in each)

Good on you levi7.

Lookes like the fairy moderator mother has been here.

Yeah, sure. Who's off with the fairies now?

wHEW! I need to see my therapist again. I sure I didn't write that. :chill:

I told them it was for a manual when I got the starter. I pretty much have given up on it. I had my uncle take it to a shop b/c I don't have time between school and work. Plus he lives an hour away from and it broke at his house.

Just because you asked for a manual doesn't guarantee that's what you got. Rebuiders are notorious about not paying attention to detail and it's hard to tell them apart.

Have the store pull an auto and a manual and compare the nose cones. You should see a difference.

Do you still have the old starter. If you do then compare the nose on each. On my automatic I had to grind the nose on the right side so it would not grind. Not all castings are alike :( I know because I had to do this on two different starters.
