So I was surprised to find this thing with a '66 date part number and
a 67 dated engine tag. As someone else mentioned, must have been from a Falcon or some such thing.

Ford's part #'s don't neccessarily indicate year of manf., only when that part was first introduced into production. So as long as Ford didn't change anything on the block it would be correct for later years. (until the next engineering change)
Well now, we have another contradiction to the data posted on the Falcon Performance site. According to the table, the 1966 170 had 7 main bearings and in 1965 it had 4.
