All Small Six best factory head for 1965 200 ci mustang

This relates to all small sixes
i have a 1965 200ci mustang...i want to add a 2 barrel carb...is there a better head to use,,,i mean maybe a cheap later model factory head nothing custom,,,thanks

The better/best head is the later large log head. Which head do you have now? Your 1965 Mustang could have a later head on it as they get changed over time occasionally.

One thing to remember is start looking for a head now as they are getting harder to find. Check wrecking yards, car-part.com, craigslist, facebook. Your block should accept the DSII Ford ignition which you may find at the same sources or check with a member here wsa111 as he is helpful and knowledgeable.

Unless you have a goal of building a max output 200 you could upgrade with a Weber 32/36, or other 2v carb, and DSII ignition system. You can likely direct mount a Rochester 2G small base carb which is a 2 barrel carb. I would not hesitate to go this route if your 200 is in good condition.

You did not provide what transmission you have now. Probably one of the absolute best mods is a T5 overdrive transmission which is a performance upgrade and will increase the drivability and capability of your Mustang. Easier if you have a manual trans now. I would do this as the first modification. The T5 is a close ratio 1-4 gears with a overdrive 5th.

Also attached is solid information for the improvement of Mustangs by a premier forum member Mr. Robert Roney (bubba22349) who sadly is no longer with us.

Hi, it may be easier to find a complete take out engine and then you will have more choices with a bunch of spare parts. As mentioned, learn how the cylinder heads have changed over the years. I was lucky enough to score a 200 with a two barrel adapter, 90 minutes away. I put the head and Holley 3500 carb on the 170 in my Bronco. I ended up freshening up the 200 and now that is in the Bronco. Good luck
