best oil filter?

What brand of oil filter do you guys think is the best? I've been using Fram PH8A and plan to upgrade to Fram PH977A. I read a thread where a gentleman took a shot at Fram, referring to it as "cheap".

I've heard a couple cracks about them as well. Though I'm not real sure why. I know a lot of guys run them on some pretty nice vehicles and I can't help but take that as evidence that fram must be doing something right.

I don't plan to quit using them anytime soon. I really love the rubber grip as well.
 
Motorcraft FL-299. Its a longer filter & that allows you to run 5 Qts. instead of 4 1/2 Qts. Bill
 
I've used fram filters for 25 years i have'nt heard anything bad about them. in my opinion they are an exellent product. but everybody has their own preference.
 
interesting web page. i kind of went through it fast , but plan to go back later and do further investigation. thanks for the info. will definitly have to find a better brand.
 
8) in the recent past people have been having oil pressure issues when they use fram filters. not everyone, but enough to be concerned about. as for me i tend to prefer motorcraft, wix, and pennzoil filters.

I change my oil and filter every 25,000 miles and have been doing so for the last 24 years with no motor problems of any kind. Every motor I have owned I have put well over 150,000 on before selling or trading the cars or trucks. My 1995 Ford with the I6 300 has over 200,000 on it now and my 2003 Ford 150 SuperCrew with a 5.4 has over 115,000 on it now and I change every 25,000 miles without any problems. All I have ever used is the Amsoil Oil Filter so I can't remark on the others as far as I know they may do the same thing I can't say but with the oil filters I have always use I can say Amsoil Oil Filters have served me well.

I didn't say it was cheap, I just suggested getting a better quality filter!!

That filter web site is interesting. What strikes me though is how similar they are. I like the Fram cuz they are at least average and maybe better than some, are available at a savings at Wal Mart and Meijer's, and they have that great rubber grip. I only have one arm so that grip helps me twist it off. Like wsa111 mentioned, there is a bigger one (PH977A) that boosts the oil capacity to 5 quarts the same as the Purolater FL-299 model does. I've never had any problem using them, I remember when they first came out! I bought them at Nation Wise. Nation Wise is gone now, but Fram is still around.

I could say more, but i sure would not want one of your vehicles after the torture you have given them.

I hope you never need warranty work at a dealership for engine problems with a service record like that.

I would love to see the inside of your engines, i bet they looked like a clogged sewer.

Show us a picture of one of your engines with the valve cover off.

I change the oil in my modern V6 Mercedes every 10,000 miles. (I have two: a C320 and an SLK320 -- all my cars have 6-cylinder engines!) I use Mobil 1 oil and a Mann (MB OEM) fleece-type filter. State of the art stuff.

Last time I picked up a filter, the mechanic asked me how often I was changing my oil. I told him 10,000 miles. He said that was good, because they were having sludging problems with engines that were on a 15,000 mile oil change schedule. Sludge is ugly stuff.

Hi Bill,

I fully understand what you are thinking. I will try to get a picture of the engines as it sits tomorrow and post them for you. I won't pull the valve cover because I don't want to take any chance of any leakage. I do check every oil change to see if there is a leak but so far so good. I do have the local tire shop here with an oil bay change my oil for me just so I can have documentation that he put the oil in the car and changed the filter every 25,000 miles. I understand it is hard to believe but it is the truth and this is why I pay him $10.00 every oil change to put the oil and filter in my trucks. I can't even buy the Amsoil and filter around here I have to order it.

The weird part is the oil is not black when it is time to change it. It is clear coming out of the bottle when I have it put in the motor but when I have the oil and filter changed the oil is a little dirty but not to the point you cannot see through it. I have never had a oil leak yet on either of my trucks but I have heard people tell of some serious nightmares. My driveways (front driveway and garage and shop driveway and shop) are oil free not one oil spot any where. I have two Falcons I drive and neither of them leak either so far and they have Valvoline 10W-30 in them with a fram oil filter. They were that way when I bought them. Just goes to show how much they are driven I might have put a 1000 on each of them since I have owned them. My wife bought a new Impala and when it hit 5000 miles I put Amsoil in her car as well.

She has 11, 400 miles as of this week and just as soon as the car reaches 30,000 I will have the oil and filter changed in her car again. She would never allowed me to do this but she has seen me use the same oil for over 20 years without a problem so she give in. Here is what I heard when I first starting using synthetic oil once I started I could not put any other oil back in the motor that when I did it would leak like a sift. I would not know about this either because after trying synthetic oil I have never used anything else.

I did put a K&N Cold Air Induction system in my truck as well as a Flow Master muffler system the first week I owned the truck. Ford told me this void the warranty so I have never had a warranty on my truck from the first week I owned it. It doesn't matter to me because if the truck does not do what I think it should I would just buy a (can we say Hemi). When it comes time to rebuild either motor I am like you I want to see the inside of the motor myself.
 
Photos won't tell anything. Are you having your oil analyzed by an oil testing lab? Many folks do this -- it's not very expensive, and it gives a great snapshot of what's happening in your engines. You'll find out just how many particulates and contaminates are in your oil, generally with a baseline giving you an idea of what's acceptable and what's critical.

When BMW went to a 15,000 mile oil-change interval recently, many of the Bimmer folks did some testing. By 15,000 miles, the results were starting to get a little nerve racking, although still within acceptable parameters. But barely. I can't imagine what 25,000 miles would bring...and there isn't a "magic" oil filter, nor an oil. Even Amsoil filters are made by humans, and are probably not as effective as the Mann fleece filters.

Personally, I would not be recommend doing what you do on a public forum without some scientific data to back it up. As the scientists say, it's anecdotal at best...

You know that is not a bad idea. I will look around in Tulsa (closest big town to me) for someone who does oil test and analyze my oil for me. I have never give it a second thought but this would be good to find out and who knows I may be shocked to hear what the oil is doing myself but after doing it this way for 24 years I don't think it will have any effect on whether or not I will do it any different. I know this sounds like a lot of miles in between oil and filter changes and it is. I was told under normal driving conditions to change every 25,000 and here is the Amsoil Drain Interval Chart to back up what I was told;

I also run the 100% Synthetic Motor Oil in my lawn mower, tiller, riding mower, air compressor, my grand-daughters co-cart and my motorcycle. I really don't know what to say or to tell you guys except that I have never had any problems with changing my oil and filter every 25,000 in my cars and trucks. When I first started using Amsoil I was told to change the oil filter every 12,500 miles but since then they have come out with a filter that doesn't need changing until 25,000 miles. I am doing what I was told when I first started using Synthetic oil nothing more and nothing less. I never even thought I might be the only person doing this I thought it was normal for the 100% Synthetic Motor Oil thats why I changed over to it. I will for all our curiosity have the oil tested and post the results. It might just be interesting to find out just what is going on in my motors.
 
i have always been told to stay away from Fram and that Wix is the best for running organic oil.
my experience differs from that advice.
i have *always* run a Wix 51515 in my truck, and for a long time it was great, then it developed a problem of the oil draining back out of the filter whenever it sits overnight, taking a few long seconds to get pressure.
in my car, it had a fram when i bought it, had enough pressure to turn off the idiot light after about a half second, now it has a wix and it takes a full 2 seconds.

of course, it's possible that the local store bought a bad case of filters, as i never used to have problems with them, but my experience is giving them less respect than i used to
 
This discussion will never result in anyone changing their minds. These Amsoil/Conklin gentlemen are passionate about the quality of what they use to the point that they think no one else enjoys the same or better results. I dare say that I have had long life engines and tranny's too and never put a drop of Amsoil in them. I can tell you however, that as a Chrysler service manager I was involved in two tranny /warranty failures concerning Amsoil. The owners just put the failure down to lack of Chrysler quality rather than the company line that only Mopar fluid should be used in Chrysler trannys.

I have already mentioned that I uae full synthetic oil, and after reading this thread I will probably switch oil filter brands. I try keep an open mind.

Remember this one fact though, no oil breaks down...it just gets dirty, contaminated, and the additives degrade over time and miles. That is just as true with Amsoil as it is with Mobil 1. As has already been stated in other replies, if you want to tempt the devil then keep that oil in there forever if you must. I don't like any brand enough to risk my engine over an oil change!
