I recently blew my head gasket (driving under normal conditions) and would like to know if there is a better head gasket, like maybe a copper gasket. The car has a 200 in it and is my daily driver, I'm not really lookng for something hpo just reliable or some tips on how to prevent this from happening again. I have no clue why it blew haven't removed the head yet, and I cant think of anything that I did that might have caused it to. Oh, it blew between cylnders 4-5; that about sums it up.

use a name brand (fel-pro, ROL, etc) and if you have detonation stop it. Other than that tourque headbolts to correct tourqe and sequence and you will be good to go.

If the head has been milled or the block decked then the headbolts may be bottoming out before reaching proper torque. Grade 8 washers under the headbolts will cure this.

Before you put it back together use a feeler guage and a straight-edge to make sure the head or block is not warped.

Is there a better gasket than the composite type available for the 200.

Not unless you can find a NOS copper shim gasket, but you won't find one...... and for a street car the composit is better anyway.

Steel head gaskets can be obtained for @ $30 along with all kinds of anachronistic engine parts at:

The free catalog is amazing in its descriptions and pictures of the Egge Obsolete Engine Parts company. I urge anyone involved in antique or vintage performance autos to send for it and support this valuable resource.
