Howdy All:

I just got home from Bonneville last night. I got to spend Saturday and Sunday on the salt. What a trip! There were at least 500 entries. Everything from Geos to GMCs, Hondas to Harleys, streamliners to inliners, Diesels to pedal power, Rat rods to rat engines. There were vehicles with two, three, four, and ten wheels.

There was an impromptu gathering of Rat rods in front of the Nugget at state line.

There were many Chevy and GMC six cylinder entries- even several Buick straight eights. They had flat heads, OEM 7port heads, twelve port heads. There were two slant sixes I saw.

In all this splendor, there was not one Ford Small Six. I only say one 300 in a rat rod, with 3 X 1s. I didn't see a Falcon, an early Mustang- I did see one slick comet with a SBF.

The folks from Inliner's International were there- several racing their early GMC and Chevy sixes and one Chevy four cylinder.

I'm reporting this to you for two reasons- 1. A 170 engine is a perfect fit in the 3 liter engine classes, and 2. It would be nice to have a small six in competition there. Classes, rules and other info is available online. Do a search on "Bonneville Speed Week" to get started.

I guess there is a third motivation for sharing this- that is if you love unapologetic speed, this is mecca. It is a strange new world and you should plan to make a visit. It is a place with like- minded people (Lots of gray hairs) doing what they love to do- GO FAST!!!

I hadn't been to the salt since '92. The differences- The salt is in better condition because of reclaimation efforts. There are more entries. There is greater variety.

And, Wendover, Nevada can be a destination vacation site for the whole family with the Nevada style casinos. Bring plenty of sunscreen, water and portable shade. Bring a camera or recorder. And when you leave the salt for the last time plan on doing a thorough rinse of your cars bottom and wheel wells to remove it.

I'm back to reality now. Dang!!!

Adios, David

I was talking with my buddy the other day and we thought it would be neat to take a 200 to the Salt Flats, even better would be if it was turbo'ed.
