Just a quick one for the experts: What BW diffs had "ears" on the top of the centre housing, with rubber in the eyes? Commodore? XE Falcon? Cortina?

I am a leaf spring guy, so I am not sure on these later cars. Trying to suss out the origin of a (wide-ish) swapped in diff.

Thanks, Adam.

Falcons dont have lugs on top of centre, cant remember about corties, but their 4 stud axles with tiny brakes, so most likely Commie.
bolt pattern is differnt.

Hi,

Cortinas have rubber in the eyes..

Have a look at my diff out of my cortina and compare!!

Hope it helps.

XE to AU Falcons had the "marriage of convienence" Watts linkage which had no traingulated upper links to the diff centre.

The Cortina (post 72 to pre TF in 1980), Centura (1974-1978) Commodore (1984- 1997) and Pintara/Skyline (1985-1993?) run similar BW 78 diffs with angled links on the top of the axle. Check the widths of the track, and PCD'S, ratios.

*four stud 108 PCD is Cortina, 1422 mm wide (2.77,2.92,3.23,3.5,3.7[4 cyl ])
*5 stud Centura was 114.3mm, not sure how wide, pos 1420 ish (2.77,2.92,3.23,3.5)
*A five stud with 120 mm PCD is Commodore, 1440 mm (VK)or 1505, (VN, VP etc. VP on had more offset. 3.08,3.27 (RARE),3.45:1, 3.9:1(NZ 4-cyl 88-90 VN4). Had a Panhard rod mount from rhs to the body.
*four stud 114.3 is Pintara/Skyline, 1395 mm wide track (3.45,3.7,3.9,4.1[Pintara]).May have had a Panhard rod too, can't remember.

Chryslers had Axxxxx code tags on the axle, as did Ford

and thats all I can think of. Oh, and post 96, most were type A diffs with different spline counts (28 rather than 25) and some earlier diff pinions are a different length of threads on the input shaft. Some had crushable spacers, others collaspable.

Hope this helps you Adam.

It's a mongrel diff of some sort. Finned drums, five-lug rims, non-original cover plate (so no ID tag, just LSD fluid info). Has been converted with stick welder to under-leaf mount on a truck. The "ears" do look like George's but the track suggests a Commy. Then again, Ford pattern 5-lugs and finned drums - maybe it is Cortina!

I'll try to get the width Tuesday.

Adam.

Unless its an 8.8 salisbury out of a US import Ford (Lincolns had coils but usally discs). Or AMC Rambler Matradore 343 or Hornet axle. They were assembled in Aussie until the late 70's. She's a mystery....

It's a Borgie for cert. I sighted the crossover logo under the centre casting.

Oh, duoh! wE HAVE A WINNER!

P76! They had them too. How did I forget this? 2.92 for the 268 cube V8, 3.23 for the E6 2622 ohc.

Ford wheels chock up on the Chrysler axles cast centre, P76 ones fit nicely without sticking. People who put XA-EL Falcon wheels on Chargers found they bolted on, but were hard to remove after a while as rust formed on the centre boss.
