Can't get my 170ci to idle

Hey everyone,

I've got my rebuilt 170ci back in the Bronco and I've got it running but it won't idle and its running somewhat rough. I can keep it running by giving it some gas but as soon as I let off the throttle, it dies. This is preventing me from setting the timing as well.

I rebuilt the carb a few months ago using one of Mike's carburetor rebuild kits but I realized last night that I am missing the Power Vent rod on the carburetor so I'm going to order one of those this morning and get that installed as soon as it comes in. Would this have anything to do with it not wanting to idle without giving it some gas?

Thank you!

Same symptom happened to me. Turns out I had forgotten to replace the line from the manifold to the PCV valve, so it had a vacuum leak (which went away when you step on the gas).

Hi, X2 look for vacuum leak(s) after you fix the carb. If this is a fresh rebuild don't let it just idle and don't let it overheat. Roll the RPMs up and down while it warms up and I just try to advance the timing by ear. Advance will raise the RPMs. Good luck

Is it a YF carb?
ol' SCV/LOM system?

When I rebuilt my 1940, I ended up with some vacuum leaks. Turned out to be related to getting the screws to all seat correctly. The other thing you might check, that I've read other people have had issues with a vacuum leak on the choke side.

if the 2 are not linked properly U can have all sorta weird running problems.

Do U have any resources on them - the Classic Inlines site's tech pages (access thru vintage inlines . com)
/OR/
the ford 6 "Handbook" also accessible thru vintage inlines.

You're going to have to pardon my ignorance. I'm not sure which "2" you're talking about so please be more specific if you don't mind.

With that said, I did get the choke set in a way that would at least keep it running and I sprayed some starter fluid on a few different places. Idle speed went up when I sprayed at the base of the carb where it meets the PCV hose. The hose is really old and hard as a brick so that's one area that I need to address.

When I google "1966 Ford Bronco six cylinder PCV hose" I can't seem to find any hoses that aren't for the 289ci. Does anyone know an alternate that will fit my motor? Mustang, Falcon, etc? Tried those as well but nothing popped up.

Glad to see you're addressing vacuum leaks. If you want - any rubber automotive hose that is long enuff and of the correct diameter can be used as a replacement for that failed one. The closest big box prts store has a roll of them to cut one off 4 U. PCV is an important part of the system - it may not be involved in the 'ideling' problem you mention.

I offered the references to the 2 items above to get U up to speed on some basics on your engine. The old ford used a system of carb/dizzy 'feedback' (SCV on carb to LOM on dizzy) to run that motor (timing, advance) that's a lill different than some folks are familiar with. There are many other benefits to use of these resources but the 'feedback system' is important.

Pardon me if I am seen as patronizing. It is offered as assistance. Just because I needed this info to understand my vehicle does not mean you would. After I got down that stuff I was able to go on to more modern modifications for improved performance. Keep in touch!

You didn't seem patronizing at all and I'm still learning all of the acronyms and lingo. Hopefully the new PCV hose will help and at least it will be one vacuum leak out of the way. Keep the advice coming as I sincerely appreciate it!

I'm sorry, OK, good.

There is a place right here (changes have come that I'm just now keeping up to).
1) One thread is discussing these issues
and the site has brought on-board the
2) "CI" info. The 3rd - "Ford six Handbook" is still available on the vintage inlines dot com site. I'd read all 3.

1) Thread here:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=75305

2) go to the "Board Index>>…" at the horizontal line above (3rd from the top of this whole page on ur 'puter), click on that to B brought to the index page for "Small Block" and view that index. At the top is an item that is stared. Click on that item ("CI Archive Site"). It will bring U 2 a thread that Perry (1 of our 'puter guys who's) brought to the site most of the Classic Inlines tech pages. There are 3 links he's listed. Click on "Tech", when open scroll to "Ignition Systems" (middle section of charts, last to the right), click on that at "LOM Dizzy". Read all the info (i.e. to the bottom of the page) on SCV and LOM.

I imagine that to be where your problem lies.
I may B incorrect as I am a rank amateur compared to many of the experts here. But
being so I can tell you it helped me.

Still having trouble? another will B along shortly after you've made some informed adjustments to the vehicle.

I'll read up on those topics and I'm sure they will help. I'm very lucky to work with a member of this forum who happens to know A LOT about these engines and he has been building a few as of late. Again, I appreciate the advice and the help!
