my first plans for my 250 was to get the dui duraspark II kit and headers. am i gonna need to upgrade to a 2v intake and carb before i do this or will i get away with it for a year???

At about 4000rpm is when you start needing a new carb.
I have a fully modified engine with a stock 1bbl Holley 1946.
Kicks ass up just past 4100rpm then falls flat.
You already have ds2, dui would be a waste of money.
Headers are an expensive way to make your car sound different, but not much faster.
The cam is the character of the engine and any significant changes there will be more apparent.
Save your money for some head work and a bottom end rebuild.
The book written by the previous poster is also required reading.

Leave the carb for now ( unless its Bad ( can't be rebuilt ,Broken etc ) , The Ignition is good to 7000 if set up correctly ( proper curve ) the DUI is not Cost Effective Espcially since you already have a Duraspark , if you want to up grade add a MSD 6AL and a Blaster III Coil ( still way less than a DUI ) I am assuming your Granada is an Automatic , and if so adding a Higher stall converter will give you the most 0-60 improvement you can make ( nice thing about a 250 is it uses the same converters as the V-8 302 family ) 250-300 dollar range will be all it costs , when choosing go up aprox 500 more stall than for a 302 ( an 11 inch rated at 2600-2800 ) , Then gears , Then a Camgranadastraightrape":1n23hrwo said:

i have the stock carter yfa 1-v carb. headers i want really to make the exhaust look nicer and get some sound. im tryin to make the motor look as nice as possible i dont plan on ever hitting the drag strip just some personal road fun( i like to cruise with my boys). im not gonna lie when i first bought this car i was gonna do the v8 typical swap untill i drove it with the six and im impressed with how smooth and how much power it had, in short what im tryin to say would be if i had $3000.00 to mess with what would you recomend doing first???
Headers and Dual Ex ( obviously custom bent since no Granada had Duals ) then what I suggested below, however if its JUST !! , a cruiser , leave the Stock converter add 3.25-3.50 gears , DO NOT add a Cam if you Don't change the Converter to a higher stall unit , the Ignition upgrade ( that includes a Dist recurve ) still recommended and a higher flow air cleaner/Filter. that's about it , all the others will Hurt Gas Economy but help Power

i wouldnt mind a little power to get me up the mountain we live in PA so im sure you know what i mean i just dont want some crazy hotrod lookin granada id like it to be car show presentable in about three years the car is already 80% done id say but putting final touches on motor stuff this winter goin ford blue with chrome dress up kit. since it will be getting new gaskets all around id figured id get a liitle kick out of it as well
Again what i suggested will give power and mpg, but after that you will sacrifice a bit of mpg for power , Exhaust wakes up a 250 , more than the smaller 144-200's , oh and I add the port divider whenever I add headers , I forgot to mention in the above post , those things are way under 3000 total , upgrading to an adjustable Valve train is also a small help
I'm just about to move to Pgh and one of the first projects for the Mustang will be a little steeper gears than the 2.79 that are in there. I'm think of 3.00 or maybe 3.20. Something to help get up the hills here. The 2.79 were swapped in about 3 years ago from the 2.5X and that made a nice difference as to the low speed acceleration in the flat lands of Michigan. The steeper gears will lower the mileage, but it will help with the drive-ability.

alright found some goodies you suggested msd/6al $229.99-blaster 3 coil $46.99...that saved me 100 bucks and no shipping costs so i appreciate the advise there FSD. now back to the carb deal i cant find any cool lookin air filter stuff for this carter is there any suggestions on a carb that will add a little horse that can be bolted with little to no tinkering?? or am i lookin in the wrong places for mods?
What Ive done in the past is to get a open element air cleaner 10-12 looks good on a Six , and weld the base of the stock air cleaner to the bottom , Instant air cleaner that fits stock carb , Do some research first , But K&N has sizes for almost any Diameter and Height ( when its time to replace the filter ) , hope this helps
I still say you have no need for an ignition upgrade, it's $300 from which you will see very little performance improvement. That being said, I run a blaster2 coil with the stock blue grommet box, but only because I got it for $40 w/shipping on ebay. Without significant work your engine will never see anything above 4000rpm.
If you're hot to do a carb upgrade perhaps the Holley 5200 is something to consider.

FYI-
1.) 170 ci carb was rated at 150 CFM's.
2.) 200 ci carb was rated at 187 CFM's.
3.) 250 ci carb was rated at 193 CFM's (1975-1979).
4.) 300 ci carb was rated at 220 CFM's.
These were all Carter Yf/YFA carbs.
1st- the stock air cleaner system is really one of Ford's better idea. It is called a Thermatic air cleaner. It draws hot air when the engine is cold and cooler air when the engine gets warmed up. The best of both worlds. The trick thing is to have the air cleaner lid plated. Either nickel (cheaper) or chrome (more expensive), both look good. Swapping out the stock type OEM paper air filter for a K&N that fits the stock air cleaner will also help with air flow.
2nd- A '79 Granada is down on acceleration power for several reasons; #1. A very high rear end gear. either a 2.79:1 or 3:1. Changing to a 3.2:1 will really wake up the car in traffic. Driven conservatively mileage won't be effected much. #2. The cam timing advanced, favoring low rpm torque rather than higher rpm power. It goes well with the stock high gearing and FoMoCos emphasis on fleet mpg. #3. Very conservative ignition timing and exhaust. What ever ignition you use, the biggest gain will be from an additional 5 degrees of initial advance. It doesn't cost you anything. You already have plans for improving the exhaust. And, Finally, #4, stock compression is 8:1. You will need at least 9:1 to feel the true power of this engine. When you get ready to do a valve job, that's where you'll find the real power. With the head off for milling to raise CR, you can also add a center port divider, back-cut the intal valves and do some mild smoothing and porting.
Finally, finding a Carter YF from a pickup with a 300 six and simply bolting it on. It should be a direct swap with linkage, fuel lines and everything. An increase of 27 cfm will help to get a little more top end rpms.
These mods will cost you a good deal less than $3,000 and will really wake-up your Granada and add to it's eye appeal too.

thanks for all the help guys im new to this straight six deal let alone ford, ive only really owned mopars so had 318's and 360's. jack fish i understand the waste of cash towards the ignition system mainly want to dress up the engine a little might just rebuild the carb and keep the stock filter pan, add the exhaust, dress the motor with some fresh paint and call it a year. :thanks:
With all this great advice I'd start out with a K&N air filter, bigger YF off a 300 truck engine and early timing chain from 1969-1971 250 engine. I'd spend three hundred bucks on a set of 1.6 rocker arms before I'd spend that on an ignition upgrade especially since you already have a DSII. If the head is coming off for valve job and shaved head to increase the compression then forego the 1.6 rockers and go with a new cam like a 264/274 dual pattern, which will appreciate that header even more and still work well with stock converter & 1 barrel carburetor; it would also be a nice cam if you went with a 2 barrel later in the future. Lower gears in the rear-end, overdrive tranny.... $3000 to spend?! rebuild with 255 pistons and 2v Performance conversion to the cylinder head, balance the bottom end... the works!
