Carb issues re-visited...

Some of you may remember I was rebuilding my Autolite 1100 a few weeks ago. Well, the time came yesterday to through the finished product on and give the car some much needed exercise. Sadly, instead of get-up and go, it went-up and died...a view of things to come, perhaps.
The first thing I did was mess with the tunning which gave me prompt results and a working motor. However, despite my best attempts with the idle mixture screw and the vent actuating lever, I can't seem to shake this rough idleing. Keep in mind the engine worked wonderfully before the carb flooded and required a rebuild.
So here's the current situation: the engine idles roughly, though it has been worse. Once in gear, however, and the gas is pressed, it feels as though my interior was replaced with an industrial sized massage therapy machine; the exhaust sound resembles a child blowing raspberries; and if the throttle is stomped on and quickly released in park, the engine struggles to keep alive.
My personal belief is that there is still a bit to be done with properly tunning the carb, but I'm beginning to think there may be something wrong with the timing (dizzy cap shows it's just a tad bit early, though nearly negligible. Now I'm thinking about going after this with a timing light, but I'm afraid I may be overlooking something and getting ahead of myself. Does this sound like timing? Or is there more to be said for more fine tunning? Thanks all, in advance, for your great advice!

So, you haven't timed it with a light? Don't trust the dizzy position. Get a light and time it that way. It's the only way to be sure. That will at least eliminate that as a possibility. I don't think it is causing all the problems, but it may be contributing causing it harder to tune the carb.
