Carb return spring

Where does the carb return spring mount to work best? This is the 200 six all stock.

Typically, it hooks to the front of the log - I have seen them over the lip where a freeze plug is set in. The most direct line of influence is desirable, as it will promote the least side wear.

I was wondering the same thing. When I rebuilt the engine last year, I lost the spring and have been running without one. Gravity has been doing the job, but I want to put one back on for the obvious saftey reasons....

Mine goes down and hooks on one of the studs on the outlet of the exhaust manifold. Don't know if it has the correct spring, but the one that was on it when I got it and worked fine for 2 yrs with the original carb and now seems to be fine after 1 yr with the H/W 5200.

both assembly and shop manual for `65 mustang show the spring hooked up to the exhaust manifold.

to reduce side wear mentioned by Addo, I have thought about actuating the throttle lever with a second lever of same length and angle, attached to the spacer, which will take all the loads from the acc. pedal and the return spring... similar to the kickdown linkage found on auto tranny cars...

I hooked it to the exhaust manifold flange after reading the different posts. It works pretty good. But it still seems to have a little pressure keeping the idle screw firm against the carb block. You;ve all been helpful. The car has been been running good the last two weeks since rebuild. Thanks!

The original spring is not very heavy. You can get one from NPD. It hooks to the exhaust manifold clamp ring directly below the carb. I would also suggest getting an assortment pack of throttle springs at the parts store. They come in varying weights and there is no hook on the end of the springs. You can try different weights and lengths, bending a hook with a pliers. If the spring is too heavy, your foot will get tired on the pedal. Too light and it won't go back all the way to the null position.
