Carter YF Rebuild

I picked up a Carter YF from a 70 Maverick to put on my Mustang. I am rebuilding the carb and in the process of putting the bottom section of the carb on to the center section. I must have the accel pump linkage turned around somehow. When you open the throttle the linkage attached to the throttle shaft wants to push up on the accel pump but the accel pump wants to go down not up. ?? Anybody know what's wrong? I spent two hours looking at it and can't see where it is wrong.

Marty,
Excellent photos.
How about providing some 'correct' pictures.
These visual aids are very valuable to others.
Tahnks.

Let us know how if works out when you put it on- I'm in the market for a later big bore one barrel and want to consider something other than the 1100/1101.

After getting the carb on the car runs much better! I can now get it to idle around 700 rpm, and it drives much better. It use to stumble to the point that I would not even drive it.

However when I figured out how it went back together I forgot to take any more pictures.

I now have to find an air cleaner before we drive it much more.

Is this carb with the big bolt pattern flange, and the 1.75 in bore? If so I may just order a rebuilt carb for a maverick from the parts house and see if that's what I get.

Some of the vendors- Mustangs Plus for sure, now sell a chrome air cleaner for the one barrel carb that is just like the 289 hipo air cleaner. It's about 40 bucks - you could probably find it for less at another vendor.

Yes it is the 1.75 bore, I modified the base to fit my manifold which is a 1.5 bore. I basically ovaled out the holes where the bolts go through the adapter base. Someday I will get a later model head and rebuild it.

I got it from an 1970 Maverick with a 200 in it.

I stopped at the yard again today and picked up a stock aircleaner for now, at least I can drive it some before winter settles in.

Have Fun!

Hey Marty,

Did your stock mustang air cleaner not fit on the YF? I was hoping to get the carb and spacer along with an air cleaner from the same car, but I've been unable to find any mavericks or granadas in local wrecking yards to date. I may have to order a carb from the parts house so I won't able to get it with the matching air cleaner- I was hoping to be able to use my stock air cleaner. As for the spacer, that's another deal I'll have to figure out. Thanks,

Sedanman

No the stock air cleaner will not fit. I had hoped that it would or that I could modify it to fit. After looking it over I decided I would be better off with a different one, I want to keep all the original parts just in case I want to put it back some day. So - I went back to the yard and found another maverick that had one that would fit.

Have Fun!

Hmmm. I went to all the Seattle area yards yesterday that said they had mavericks (two!) and both were stripped clean- no granadas in sight either. I got a carb plate off a fairmont, but no carb on that or the other one that was in the yard. I figured after that I'd just order a Carter carb from the parts store, but if I can't find an air cleaner this might not be such a good choice. There is one more yard down south to check with, and if that does not bear fruit I'll have to order an 1101- not my preference!

Hey Marty,

I hope you're out there as nobody's answered my thread on YF tuning. I got a rebuilt YF from the local parts store (on the 2nd carb now) and it has a flat spot just off idle and I'm pretty sure the problem is related to the pump. I have no rebuild sheet to check for specs-did your rebuild instructions say anything on how to adjust the accelerator pump?

Thanks,
Thor

Here are a couple of pic's of the Service Worksheet that I got with my rebuild kit. Hope it helps.

Thanks, Marty- much appreciated :) It appears I need to adjust the metering rod first before the accel. pump, so I guess I need to play with that a bit more to get the correct "jetting' mixture before I do the pump adjustment. Back to the garage!
