Carter YF vs. Autolite 1100

I've recently purchased and rebuilt an Autolite 1100 to replace the Carter YF that came on my 200 CID 6-cylinder '66 mustang. Also got an Autolite "coolant-heated" spacer plate.

Was excited to get the new carb. on over the holiday weekend, but ran into a snag. The intake manifold has larger throat (approx. 1 3/4 in. dia.) than Autolite spacer plate (approx. 1 3/8 in. dia.) and the bolt pattern is different.

Do I need to replace the intake manifold? Should I stick with the Carter carb. for the season? I would really prefer to go as stock as possible.

replace the intake manifold, uh oh, you are in for a little surprise

Howdy back Strikerd:

The problem may be the head itself. Questions- What head do you have? The casting code is on top of the intake manifold behind the carb. Since it has a 1 3/4" carb hole it is likely a 1970 or later casting.

It may be that the previous owner replaced the head with a later version that had the Carter YF carb already on it.

The intake manifold cannot be replaced as it is cast as part of the head. You may need to adapt an early carb adapter for the Autolite 1100 to match your head. What distributor are you using? Remember the Autolite 1100 has a Spark Control Valve to coordinate with the stock '66 Load-a-Matic distributor advance system. The distributors with the Carter carbs have both centrifugal and vacuum advance.

The engine may have been replaced at some point - this car has been in my family only since '95. I am trying to return it to close to stock...

The number on the intake manifold is OE1C-C8DE 6080M. The exhaust manifold has OE2G C8DE.....

Is it more likely that the entire engine was replaced, or just the head? How do I tell what was done to mine?

The diameter of the carb opening on the intake manifold is 3/8" larger than the diameter of the spacer plate for the Autolite carb. Can I make this carb work anyway -- if so, how?

Thanks in advance - I appreciate advise, more than sarcasm!

Those are 1968 castings, looks like at least the head and exhaust manifold was replaced. They (the exhaust manifolds) are notorious for breaking though. Under the exhaust manifold are the block casting numbers.

One thing you might want to be aware of is the Motorcraft/Autolite 1100 is a POS and not that great of a carb to start with and lots of people have swapped to a Carter YF, Carter RBS or a later model Holley (1947) IIRC?

You will have to check your distributer to see if its compatable with the 1100 or you will have to swap that out too.

You will probably have to switch air cleaners and maybe take a close look at your throttle linkage.

Just somthing to think about!

Well there seems to be some debate over whether the Carter YF or the Autolite 1100 is a better carb. I can't weigh in on the debate - I've got no experience - other than my first mustang ( a '65) 25 years ago with the Autolite (I never had trouble with it).

So I will rebuild this Carter YF and put it back on for the season - then start to look for an older engine to rebuild over the winter.

Any suggestions on how I might get a 65 / 66 200cid? I'd appreciate your advise on how to go about finding one.

I certainly prefer the YF. They run smoother, IMO. Less hiccups. Easy to adjust, etc. I would suggest using a vacuum distributor with mechanical advance and a YF carfb You'll be happy.
