I need help identifying this engine. I've checked some earlier posts and looked at some stuff on the engine casting numbers. The first number is the the one on the log, it's: C6DE-6090-B, as far as I could figure thats a 66 200 from I think maybe a falcon, my confusion is on the casting on the block, its C6DE-6015-B, I couldn't find any explanation of the 6015. Thanks for the help. Gary.

Is the engine and block out of a 1966 mustang or a 1964 1/2? I see your signature says you have 64 so I'll assume that one. The engine and block could have been swapped out thus not having matching casting numbers. 6015 refers to the group number.

I"m not sure about it being to original engine, probably not. based on the vin it should have a 170 in it. That's what I'm curious about. How can I tell whether it's a 200 or a 170? Do the numbers tell you that or do you look at something else.

Howdy WarEagle170:

No, we have yet to decipher a way to tell engine size is some applications by the casting numbers. Your head was used on both 170s and 200s. We have found many 170s with the C6DE casting mark, the B is a first, if this is a 170. And Andrew already mentioned the 6015 or 6090 as a group casting #. Most blocks have the 6090 casting mark, some use other marks. I don't know for sure and consistently what the difference means. I sure wish some one would tell us.

If you're trying to determine whether you have a 170 or a 200, try looking through a spark plug hole. 200s have dished pistons, 170s have flat topped pistons. You may be able to see or, with a probe, feel the difference.

Thanks for the info, btw i'm a true amateur, what and where are the freeze plugs? :)

C6= 66
D=Falcon
E= means part was released by the engine division
6015=should be the group number for 200cid blocks
B= Second revision of this part

The p/n on the side of my 1980 200 I6 block is D8DE-6015-GE
D8=78
D=Falcon
E=The part was designed and released by the engine department
6015=The group number for 200 blocks
GE=Good grief this thing has gone through a lot of revisions. A revision is any design change.

Thanks for all the replies. Took a look through the spark plug hole, piston looks dished, at leaset i think it does, I've not looked at a whole lot to compare to. All the knowledge I have has come from the last year of working on my mustang. While my knowledge base has grown since I began its still quite small. Anyway, looks like I may have just got a 30ci jump in my engine size free :lol:. Nothing like upgrading your engine through the power of the internet. Thanks again.

Another good point is that your 170 I6 was a 4 main bearing block. The 66 200 is a 7 main bearing block. Much stronger and more common.

Freeze plugs are the soft, round plugs on the right side of the block. They are almost directly over the casting number.

how can you tell the difference from a 200 and a 250? I have a 1968 and don't know wich of either came original nor which i have. Some one plz help.

THE 250 has 4 bolts holding the waterpump on. A 200 had 3. Also, the 250 came out in 1969 beganning with C9DE casting number on the head.

Howdy All:

And the 250 has the starter mounted below the oil pan to block gasket line. 200's have the starter mounted higher, above the oil pan gasket line. Later 200, after '80, have the lower starter position
