I was wondering if i could get rid of my charcoal canister and plug the line from the tank and carb vent. right now all thats hooked up to the canister is the fuel tank hose and the vent hose, so i dont even think its doing anything...i tried hooking it up to manifold vacuum but that makes the car run worse. could i hook up the hose from the fuel vent to the manifold or would that end up sucking liquid gas into the manifold? would there be ill effects to the engine if i didnt have the gas tank line hooked up? reason i ask is cause i think its useless right now and i need room to mount my hydroboost system.

I've read that people who have gotten rid of the canister do the following:

1. block the gas pressure line from the tank and remove the seal on the gas cap to allow for pressure release.

2. attach a fuel filter to the line and then out behind the wheel well.

3. just remove the canaster and leave the gas pressure line open

which of these would u recomend. I still havent read what they've done with the hose from the carb fuel bowl but i guess manifold vacuum would be too much so how about just running a hose to the air cleaner?

whatever, i just went ahead and did it. I attached the carb fuel vent to the air cleaner and attached some extra hose to the fuel pressure line and put a fuel filter on it. The engine doesnt seem to mind it, but i havent takenn it for a lengthy trip to see how it performs at top speed and how the mileage is.

That should work well. I doubt the charcoal was doing any good at this point. Usually the charcoal has gotten swamped with gas at some pont due to topping off the gas tank. Not knowing how the plumbing on the tank is, it could be possible to have gas enter the line if the tank is full. But I doubt that should be a problem since th carb sits higher than the fuel tank.

thanks for your imput Doug. i remember filling up too full one time and gas game pouring out from under the car under the gas tank area but not in the charcoal canister or i would have smelled it so i dont think i have to worry about it leaking from the line.

Your vent line might be parted. Early Corvettes had that problem. The tank vent line rant out to the fill up door. Then there was a drain hose running behind the seats and out the bottom of the floor. The line often parted letting gas drain behind your seats. Even at 70 mph, it takes a while to air out all those fumes. :D

I dont think the line is parted cause i dont have any venting at the gas fill door (i checked by running the hose that used to go to the charcoal canister to a vacuum port and then went and undid the gas gap and it definitely wasnt breathing (if i would have driven the car for a while the tank would have imploded), so i think the only breathing hose is the one that went to the canister. but i still dont know where the overflow gas came from.

That was the first thing I did to my bronco, tear out that emission stuff. I ran a piece of fuel line b/tw the two vent lines to plug off and drilled out the gas cap to help vent. I also got a dry rotted vent-fill tube, at least you know when your tank is getting full.

yea stock emmissions sucks....i have completely removed every single emissions unit on the car now.....but all u people dont have to worry about emmisions cause ive got a few things on the go which run the engine cleaner than stock and will either give me better performance or the same....I dont have to go for an emissions test for another year, but i might take in the car to get tested anyhow just to see the ratings....if theyre way better than stock than I'll post what i did, but till then....
