Cleaning oil and buildup out of an engine...

So if you are following my saga then you know I have a little oil buildup and crud in my new engine... (been feeding it oil through the PCV valve!)

I know about the water vapor method to clean an engine of carbon deposits... but what should I do, or what would you do if you were in my situation.

With a newly rebuilt 200 block and head, that has been burning an oil mixture for the first 450 miles.

The plugs I changed, and the intake I plan on removing and cleaning by hand... but what should I do about the pistons and chambers? other internals etc...

Should I just burn them clean for a few hundred more then try the water method to shake it loose? will that work on oil buildup? my polished pistons have a nice black coating on them? just wondering if I should do anything at all at this point? I am not going to do any water cleaning until I get some more miles on the engine... I would probably feel safe doing that with about 1000 miles or so on there.
 
the water method should do it. maybe run it a little lean or adjust the timing to run it hotter a little to help burn it out. maybe some STP

Brake fluid; and water.

drive your engine until normal operating temperature, find a nice quiet spot where you won´t be disturbed (neither by law enforcement nor by treehuggers), then slowly (very slowly! little by little) pour the brake fluid down the carb throat.
Keep the engine running under all circumstances, and avoid inhaling the burnt fumes (lots of them)

Then take herfor a spin around the block, make sure nobody (police or treehuggers) followed you, open the hood and slowly pour water down the carb throats, just like Slade (cobrasix) explained to us a couple of weeks ago.

Drive her home, change the oil and make sure your PCV works correctly.
 
I've never heard of the brake fluid...interesting.

I like water. Easy way to keep it running and to only use a little water, get a water mist bottle from the supermarket or Walmart. But it on spray and rev the engine up and spray the water in. Just like the brake fluid, keep it running at all times. Sometimes it is easier with two people, but the water bottle sprayer makes it easier with one person. DON'T do this in you driveway. You'll leave a lot of soot on you driveway or in your yard. As Simon says (hehe), find a nice spot like a big open parking lot right out side of green peace and do it there.

is it buildup just in the combustion chamber, or is it in the entire motor?
 
General Motors Top Cylinder Cleaner. Made specifically for this very job. Follow the directions on the can. Get the aeresol can.
 
450 miles on the new engine? I wouldn't do anything at all. That stuff will burn off once you start driving it regularly. If it were me, I'd take it out on the highway and run it for a half hour or more at 60 - 65, then turn around and go back. That will help a lot. If you've wiped any other remaining oil from the intake, I wouldn't bother with that either.

I agree with Phil, Get your PCV set-up the way you want it (Doug's elevated PCV in the cap idea should work) and go for a run at high RPMs :wink:

Just a few things that come to mind:
Have you tried taking vacuum reading s with the PCV valve plugged?

You have a 6.5 power valve and 61 jets; I’m thinking a 4.5 power valve and A set of jets in the 65-68 zone, just a thought.

Have you verified and adjusted your cam timing yet?

When you adjust your advance and idle do you have the vacuum advance plugged?
