click and a jerk

When I am on the high way doing about 60 (about max for my car)I occasionally hear a click/pop and then the cars jerks. I have a 62 falcon with a 65 200. Auto-choke carb and auto trans. stock Dizzy. I recently checked the timing and it seemed fine I believe it is 14 deg advanced from TDC. I double checked the mark on the balancer and it was accurate. Any clues as to what it can be? I have a suspicion it could be a carboration.

yes level ground and steady throttle. it jerks kinda hard likes it going to die but its for a split second. I could back off on my advance.

how severe is the jerk? my truck had a severe click & jerk probably a couple dozen times on one afternoon, each time felt like i locked up the whole rearend for a quick impact, then fine again. the cause was the rear diff breaking off gear teeth from the side gears. i doubt this is your problem unless its a SEVERE jerk.
much more likely, its a fuul or fire issue

not a severe jerk just a momentary pause in momentum. the click right before is weird. I will lower the advance and recheck my timing

a vacuum leak may cause similar symptoms as well.

Easy to check wih an unlit propane torch.

Maybe a u-joint binding?

BTW, if all your car will do is about 60mph, you have some major issues. The speed limit was 70mph when the car was built. Mine tops out at about 95mph. Get in there and see what's up. maybe rebuild the carb, tune-up, timing… invest $100 in a Pertronix upgrade.

I do seem to think I have some major issues. I bought the car in its current condition and am starting the process of sorting things out. It tops out at 60-65 with the pedal floored and it feels like it is struggling bigtime. Not to mention it has a 200 in it that is supposed to be rebuilt but I have no way of confirming this. Is there a better carb than the auto choke stock carb or should it be sufficient if it is properly functioning?

My stock 66 stang does not seem to have any problems doing 80, it takes a while to get there but Im guessing you have something wrong. They aint rubber burning rocket ships but they are more than adiquite for getting around. Start with the basics like compression and work your way to the more complicated and expensive stuff. Ignition is a fairly easy and cheap upgrade, carbs are more expensive and complex, neither one will do any good if you got a mechanical problem in the engine.

Your 60 mph max speed sounds to me like you aren't getting any vacuum advance on your distributor. A quick search on the boards here should tell you how to check the advance on your dizzy.

As far as your click/jerk symptoms go, does it sound like backfiring or detonation (combustion issues) or like slipping or broken gears (mechanical issues)? Also, does the jerk feel like a misfire (engine dieing) or more like popping the clutch?

In my 66, the stock 1100 carb on a 200 mated to a C4 is good for up to 90 mph, so struggling at 60 is a sure sign of trouble somwhere. If you are concerned about the condition of your carb, I'd throw down the 20 bucks for a rebuild kit and spend a couple of hours getting acquainted with the insides of your carb. However, I would test the dizzy a little more first.

all good advice. I'd even start inspection a little simpler, the air cleaner. It might be plugged. The other "suffication" that might be taking place is the choke is stuck on. Mkae sure when you turn it off, the butterfly is 100% vertical.

Check it out and report back. Curious minds want to know.

I believe it has an automatic choke. I will check the manual to see if I can manually shut it on and off. thanks guys I have a lot to look into

Like others have said check to make sure the choke butterfly is all the way open / vertical when the engine is warmed up. If it is an automatic choke they often have issues with the tubes rotting out that go to the exhaust manifold or the passages in the carb pluggin up with crud. On the 1100's there is a passage in the base gasket, if you have the wrong gasket or put it on the wrong way... no choke.

All very good advice.

I personally would back off your timing some. I'm not a huge fan of advanced timing. For a 65 200 with an automatic transmission, the timing is 10*. I'd start there. Also, double check TDC on your timing mark. It could be off. I found my balancer mark was about 10* off of the timing bracket.

Then look over your carb and check for vacuum leaks.

Also, how old is the carb? Has it been rebuilt recently? You may be suffering from a clogged fuel port.

I don't know the history of the carb. I think it is a stock carb for that engine. I can post a pic and maybe you guys can tell me what it is.
I think I will check for vacumm leaks and then back off on the advance. After that I will pull the carb and take a look at it and see what I am dealing with. I appreciate all the help. I ahve a lot of things to look into.
