I have a 70 maverick, and it has a 200 in it but with a 250 head. That's the way it was when I got it. But right now, I'm looking to get some Cliffored Headers to switch to dual exhaust but do I need to get the headers for the 200 or for the 250? Or do I need to go back to a 200 head before I put on the headers?

Howdy,

The external dimensions of the 200 and 250 log heads are IDENTICAL.

You need to go to the Sticky posts and read the Head Swap Sticky.

The differences are in combustion chamber size and valve sizes for different years. For your Maverick, a 1970 200 head is identical to a 1970 250 head inside and out.

Good luck with your headers.

That sounds right. The differences here seem to be related to the deck height of the block, not the manifold mounting surface configuration. If you have a 250 block the head is sitting a little higher in the engine compartment because the deck height is taller. That means if you tried to use a set of long-tube headers for a 200 on such a configuration your headers could be colliding with the bottom edge of the firewall or the floor of the passenger side footwell.

If, on the other hand, you had a 200 block and tried to use a set of long-tube headers for a 250 your headers could be colliding with the crossmember or or at least hanging down lower than you'd want.

So, yeah ... I think you should select the headers based on the type of block you have. If you have a 200 block, then I think you should use the 200 headers.

Just to elaborate a bit on what the others are saying in case it's not clear. There are essentially 3 things a header has to fit 1) the exhaust ports on the head, 2) the contours of the engine block, and 3) the contours of the vehicle.

What Hot 6t Falcon was telling you was addressing #1, that the 250 and 200 heads are identical, so that part is no issue on your question.

What nckwiencek was telling you was addressing #2, since the 250 and 200 blocks are somewhat different, the header you need is for the 200.

For #3, you need the headers to fit your 70 Maverick.

So altogether, you need headers for a 200 in a 70 Maverick.

Thanks everyone, i really really really appreciate it! thanks again`
