How could I run a compression test on an engine thats out of the car, no starter on it, but there is one I can use. What is the easiest and safest way to accomplish this? The engine is a 200 btw.

You'll only get a fairly basic result with a cold motor that's been "sitting" - but try it with the carb jammed wide open, and crank over while the gauge is screwed into each spark plug hole in turn. Note how long you need to crank for, until a "plateau" is reached in pressure.

Then repeat the process with a tablespoon of oil squirted into each cylinder before testing. Note and date all results as you go; then you can compare back after a few months running.

I dare say that you only need make sure there's oil in the engine and also that you remove all the plugs before doing it.

Since the engine is out, if there's even the slightest possibility that you will do some work to it, don't worry about a wet compression check, you will not leed any oil in the cylinders. Just post your results and let us know how things went.

BRACE the engine :)

Better test would be a leakdown test.

Get a leakdown gauge, hook up some compressed air and test the condition of the ring and valve seal.
