I deglazed my cyclinders in my 200 this weekend using a hone with 220 grit stones. I measured the bore before and after. It appears I took out .0005 of each cyclinder in the process. Does this sound right, or excessive? Very pleased with the cross hash results.

Hi, I can't help with the measurments, but 220 grit seems pretty course to me. What rings do you plan to use? Chrome molly rings need a very smooth finish with 400 grit stones. I prefer a 3 stone hone over the ball hone for finish work. Good luck

With that course finish, you will have to use plain cast iron rings.
Plasma moly needs a finish 500+

X3 the on cylinder finish, depending on what type rings you intend to use. The .0005 removed isn't so much, but how much piston to cylinder wall clearance did you end up with now?

Y did U do that?

New pistons, new rings, cylinders had to be deglazed. Rings purchased from Hastings, here's their recommendation:

General Honing Recommendation:

The Cylinder finish numbers should be as follow.

General Performance

RpK 10-15

Rk 40-45

Rvk 50-55

Generally this surface finish can be achieved by using a 220 grit to size the bore at medium pressure. Then hit with a plateau Honing 400 grit about 6-8 strokes light pressure.

Recommend the use profilometer to verify the numbers provided above.

So, the hone I purchased came with 220, first round of honing is complete. Picked up a set of 400 grit stones from NAPA, second round will provide the final touch.

Hi, did they recommend any type of oil for the hone? I always used plenty engine oil in a squirt can. Glad you are getting somewhere. You didn't mention the ring material. Good luck

Y did U do that?: "New pistons, new rings." Want good seat for xxx rings. Piston to cylinder wall clearance is now xxx. Will give
a light pass w/400 grit.
(sorry, not meaning to put wrds in ur mouth ! )

hope anything we offer is of use !

Cutting oil or conventional. We used WD40. Sprayed the stones well and cyclinder walls. Cleaned up easier.
