Are there in major differences in 200ci blocks from 65-67? I am thinking about buying a 67 block for my 65 and I did not want any suprises like not being able to bolt up to my auto tranny, motor mounts, etc.

Thanks for your help and advice

Yes , there is a major evolution of the rear Bell house size / pattern for use of the newer transmissions. Older pattern uses small 3spd and Automatic bells. starting @ '67 - (C7DE?) castings , the larger bell pattern reaches the top of the block at head gasket. Older bells are @ 2" below head/block line. After @ '66 the sixes were increasingly equipped with "Toploader " 3 spds or C4's usually, AFAIK . I have a C8DE 170 with "dual " pattern for small or large bell/trannys. Also a C5DE casting 200 with small bell only pattern...

The larger bell pattern accepts the reliable 3spd C4 auto and "Toploader" 3 or 4 speeds as well as simple swap for late model 5 speed T5 Mustang trannys ...

Someone probably has some pics handy...

I am just starting to tear things apart. The motor just came out last night. This will sound dumb, new to this, how do I tell if I have a small or large bellhousing on the tranny or what size the tranny is. Our car is a 65, but I think think the engine might be from a 66 and I am not sure about the auto tranny.

There are five different kinds of small six block.
1.Early high mount 144/170/187/200, 2.77 bellhousing

2.Dual pattern high mount 170/200, (3.03 bellhousing later becoming single pattern without drill holes for pre 1967 2.77 engines)

3.Low mount 200 (from 1968 to 1983, various Lincoln Mercury lines and then Granada/Monarch/Comete/Fairmont/Cougar/Zephyr )

4.Low mount 250 US (a much taller, wider block)

5.Foreign Argentine/Australian blocks from 1966 to the early 90's 170/188/200/221/250 on wards .Which are not a concern to you but copy for your info

From what I've heard, you should be okay with fitting a later I6 200 block from the late sixties. Its just that the holes for the early block weren't always drilled at the factory after the late sixties, and it might mean some significant extra work drilling them at worst. There are also some dowels that might need to be hammered into the old positions, with the later dowels removed at the very worst. I've not done this but have read about it since 2002.

Even my 82 Mustang has a high mount block, but :hmmm: even it can be drilled to fit the earlier transmissions if required. So I'd be supprised if a 67 block would be undrilled for the earlier bellhousing.

Hope it all works out fine.

8) the only real change between the blocks is that the later block has both bell housing bolt patterns, and the only difference between the two bell housing patterns in the early blocks is that the upper two bolt holes were drilled higher up on the block, about an inch as i recall. my old 66 falcon had both patterns drilled and tapped from the factory.

This is what my block looks like, I borrowed this from another thread and modified it with the arrows. Clockwise from left: red arrow is one of the dowel holes I have, blue arrow is dowel I had to drive out because it didn't line up, pink up top is a hole that I could drive a dowel into but it does not exist, and green is where a theoretic dowel would be 180 degrees from the red. The head scratcher here is the pink arrow. Did a lazy machinist forget to drill it on my block or what? So basically I have just the red arrow dowel and nothing else. I need the later bellhousing that goes higher to reach the two bolt holes and dowel about two inches above the holes I have. Question is, what is the serial number on that one? Curse you and your unnecessary design changes Ford!!

I posted this in my original thread, but since this one looks dead, I figured I'd hijack it since you guys seems to be in the know as well. Here is the link to the original thread. Sorry to be greedy, but I need help!
