There is some interchageability in the early overhead valve six Ford engine series (215 - 223 - 262). The most significant changes happend in 1954 when the motor mount locations and distributor moved. The 215 and 223 share the same stroke (and maybe crankshaft) and the head will swap between them. Some of the late 223 heads had bigger valves and maybe intake passages. I don't think there is any reason you can't use a 223 distributor in your 215, but I don't know for sure. Check drive gear locations, sizes, hold down clap locations, etc. on your distributor when you try to replace it. Also be aware that Ford may have changed the advance mechanism in the later distributor. Make sure to match the advance curve to your engine.
