Does 300 Carb mount on 170?

Well, I just went out and took measurements for Hood Clearance and there is no way I can fit an Adapter & 2bbl Carb. I have to stay with the direct bolt 1bbl Carbs. I have looked through the Site and found that I can direct bolt up Carbs from the 240/250.

My previous post was adding the Adapter & a 2bbl, DUI or Duraspark, Flowmasters to improve the exhaust. I still plan on adding the DUI and the exhaust improvements, just need a 1bbl to add on.

So, would a Carb, like the Carter YF, from a 300 bolt on my '67-170? Or is 240 & 250 the biggest that interchanges directly with the 170?

Howdy 67Orange:

THe best bet for a '67, if you wish to use stock mechanical linkage is to find an Autolite 1101 from a '69 Mustang with a 250 engine. This carb will look very similiar to your stock 170 Autolite 1100 except that it will not have a SCV and will have a ported vacuum source to be compatible with your DSII. It is rated at 215 CFM as compared to 150 CFM in your stock 170 Autolite.

The 1101 will be much easier to tune to your engines needs then a YF from either a 240 or 300. These "Big Six" Carter YFs are rated at 220 CFM and will best be adapted with a cable throttle linkage. These YFs have a much richer idle circuit which, normal adjustments cannot clean up.

The Carter RBS, used on 250 engines from 1970 to '73 are rated at 215 CFM and have a very low profile. They also use a cable linkage.

All of these carbs have a 1 11/16" throttle bore (1.69"). You will have to taper your stock carb to manifold adapter by tapering out the top edge to allow the butterfly throttle blade to open. The adapter is made of soft material and is easy to work with either a rat tail file or a rotary grinder.

The 1101 uses the same bolt spacing as your '67 1100. The RBS and YFs are wider.

All of these big one barrels will have about the same WOT and top end. The idle, transitions and cruise is where the differences will be.

Good luck.
Adios, David
