DSII clearance

Should the cap adapter be hitting the block? When it's installed, the adapter hits the block and has no room to time it. Is that normal? Suggestions? I really was hoping it'd be an easy swap without any problesm

It shouldn't do you some pictures? One thing you can do is to swap the wide DSII cap, rotor and adapter for the DSI cap and rotor its the same size as your old point distrib.

Well dad and uncle were dropping it in for me so I do not have any pictures. I may try the DSI thing eventually. THey said there was not wiggle room and the adaptor would hit the block. WHere do they sell the DSI cap and rotor? local autoparts store?

I guess it was that the base of the distributor had no room and the adaptor was hitting. THis doesn't make sense to me. Didn't these come stock on these engines at one point?

They were stock starting in the mid 70's until '83 for 200's. You should not be having any clearance issues. Maybe the vacuum advance but that is easy to fix., just rotate the distributor.

Yes The DuraSpark or DSII was factory stock on all the 200's from mid 1976 to end of their production around 1983. This link shows a DSII install into a 200, though a tight fit it will go in. you might have to move the fuel line out of the way a little or you could also unclip the adapter ring and remove it until you first get the distributor body down seated into the block.

The original DuraSpark or DSI come out in 1974 and was used until during 1976 Models when it was replaced with the improved DSII. So yes you should be able tp find a DSI cap and rotor at your local autoparts store. Good luck

That's what I had told them but he insisted the base and adaptor were hitting the block. I'm really confused as to why it isn't fitting

With the d2 adapter off the distributor body is the same size as the original point style distributor. Which is the same size as the d1 distributor body. There should be no problems.

I think I'll just install it myself. I can't win arguments. It should drop in from everything I've seen. Heck, since the dui can fit the dsii sure can

Yeah, they are doing something wrong. It should slide right in, unless they have the vacuum canister too close to the engine.

Well that's what I had thought but they were saying it was the cap adaptor. I said I could just buy the DSI cap but no answer. I guess we'll see what's on there when I get it back ha.

Not quite sure why they would install it with the cap or cap adapter installed in the first place. Not that it should make a difference

Well it was dropped in without the rotor, adaptor, and cap. Then when they when to put the adaptor on, it was hitting the block I think.

It sounds like they have it aligned wrong, maybe have one tooth off on the distributor gear.

Yeah who knows. Hard for me to say what's going on since I can't see it. I know there shouldn't be any issues with this but I had to drop the subject ha

Well, you can rotate it however you want, just so long as you know where #1 TDC is and adjust the cap and wires accordingly. I never bothered trying to have #1 forward. I'd just set TDC on the block, stab the dizzy, marked where the rotor was pointing and start there with #1 wire and follow the firing order.

I'll take a stab at it when I get back. Thanks for the help. And your website is a great motivation CobraSix. Once I saw how you did your offy set up, I started to find everything I would need to do it. I have an extra head and engine I want to try it on. Just which carbs are you using?
