I bought the newer version of the Pertronix, Pertronix 2, there was no noticable difference in appearance or performance from the original version, and the cost was about 30 or so buck more.

The reason I changed to DS2 is the fact that the original Pertronix and P2 systems failed i.e. no spark=no drive=me really pissed off. Yes the install was a bit more difficult but the fact you can run wider gaps, bigger wires, and when combined with the MSD unit, I have found you get far superior performance.

Again this is just an opinion, it all depends on what your automotive expertise is and how much you want to spend.

I prefer the DS2 simply due to the fact that I live in a rural area & getting parts can be a pain sometimes. Pretty much everything for the DS2 is right off the shelf, even in the middle of no where.

Either system needs to be rebuilt and recurved to work properly. A Ptx in a 40-year old dizzy is no great shakes unless the first comment is heeded.

My loadomatic (like all of 'em) relies on the SCV in the 1-V carb (see the sticky in this forum). When you go to a 2-V carb, you need a new dizzie that uses "normal" vacuum and (usuall) mechanical advance. The SCV is an ingenious method of partially retarding sprk (vice complete retard) under a load (where normal vacuum drops dramatically). The venturi vacuum pickup them gives you enough advance to deal with the higher than idle engine speed.

A neat system. I wish there was a 2-V carb with a SCV...never seen anything close.

I''m looking at teh Mallory unilite distributor (part# 4563001). It's a little more pricey than the duraspark. I'll end up with one or the other.

Good luck!

With a proper curve and hot coil they will (should) both perform the same, but I personally will never use a pertronix again. I've had two units go out in different cars, plus I've talked to quite a few peolpe who have had the same problem. Nothing to do with performance; just failing on the side of the road, keep a spare set of points in the glovebox, erratic behavior, etc. The REASON I went to pertronix originally was so I didn't need to keep spare parts in my glovebox, much less points and condensor to replace the unreliable electronic ign :?:  I installed...
