I bought the newer version of the Pertronix, Pertronix 2, there was no noticable difference in appearance or performance from the original version, and the cost was about 30 or so buck more.
The reason I changed to DS2 is the fact that the original Pertronix and P2 systems failed i.e. no spark=no drive=me really pissed off. Yes the install was a bit more difficult but the fact you can run wider gaps, bigger wires, and when combined with the MSD unit, I have found you get far superior performance.
Again this is just an opinion, it all depends on what your automotive expertise is and how much you want to spend.
