Duraspark II Install

I am wanting to install a DSII on a 65 mustang. From what I understand, you need a DSII distributor and a coil off the same donor car. Which brand of coil is best to use with this conversion? THanks.

Normal mode with this install, is to bypass the factory-fitted resistive wire.

If that's how you want to go, best practice is to use the original ignition wire to operate a constantly-on relay that switches 12V from the battery, directly to your coil. An auto electrician will be able to supply the best relay and socket for this level of duty.

You can use any 12V coil with the Duraspark, but the higher-spec aftermarket ones might allow more plug gap, and slightly improved fuel economy.

Regards, Adam.

You need the dizzy and a module. The DS2 modules are a finned metal box typically mounted on the inner fender well. The module will have 2 harnesses, one goes to the dizzy, this one is easy you just unplug it. The other end goes to the rest of the car and the coil. If you are taking or wanting to use the DS2 coil you need that connector because its a t sort of thing vs. screws that most other coils have. You then want to get as much of the rest of the harness as you can so you have wire to work with in your car. If you are getting all this out of a donor car you might as well take the coil also. If it turns out to be bad I have found that the typical performance coils cost about the same as the 'oe' coils that are often special order.

You will also want to pick up a new cap, rotor, and wires. I usually use 78 fairmont since that is in the middle of the DS2 run.

you can get a rebuilt distributor for about $50.00. I went with a msd6 ignition box and wired it directly to the distributor. if you want to keep your plug wires, you can go with a '74 maverick points cap . it also keeps the original '65 look.

I bought a rebuilt DS II on Ebay for $39.99 plus shipping. The Module is a GM HEI for $19.99 plus shipping. The coil is my Pertronix Flamethrower that I had used with the Pertronix I (I also bypassed the Ballast Resistor). I switched the cap to the DS I because I installed a Power Steering Pump. The Dizzy looks so close to stock, that now I'm thinking of hiding the GM Module to save some embarassment.
