engine problems

That baffle behind the snorkel, inside the air cleaner is to distribute the air (I presume) so that the spot just inside the air intake doesn't get packed firmly with soot. That or wear a hole there.

i got a new condenser and points today and it's still doing it. i set the points gap to .25

my old condenser was really bad and so was my points, they were total garbage, so i thought for sure it was going to work but it didn't.

we didn't have the timing light, so we played around with it by ear and no matter how advanced or retarded it was, it was still doing the same thing. Tomorrow we are going to get the timing light on it and set it.

i'm stumped. if we set the timing tomorrow and it still does it, we have no idea what's wrong. The car seems to idle fine on it's own but when given gas, it sounds chunky and does that weird 3 round burst of a thumping kinda feeling. When i drive it, it does that 3 round burst kinda choke rumble thing so bad it's un-drivable pretty much.

my car runs rich too. But that seems to be another story.

when the car is on and we took spark plugs off, there didn't seem to be any difference in the idle except for when we took the first plug off, but nothing crazy.

What should i do if setting the timing doesn't work ?

when i was installing the fuel filter, i cut the hose and from where the rubber plugs into the pump, the dame thing came off. i just put it back in. it leaked a bit once but i just pushed it back in and it has been fine since..... or has it ?

i'll take a look at my carb today.

UPDATE:

After setting the timing between 6 and 10 and going through everything, we found that a long bolt on the back bottom of my exhaust manifold was almost all the way out, as well as another one hahaha. Basically there was nothing we could see or figure out for that matter as to what was causing this. buddy sprayed carb cleaner in there and then went for a drive. i noticed it was better a little bit and was actually drivable but still jerky. i went and got gas, then went to the store and picked up some more carb cleaner. On the way back to my buddies house it was getting better and better. All we can come up with is that there is some gunk in my carb. i'm gonna go for a drive and see if i can drive it out.

PS.

will a 1982 (somewhere around that year) 200 inline six hook up to my 3 on the tree transmission and work well ?

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE !!!!!!!

My car is idling and performing better then it has ever before !! After driving 7 miles and getting it up to 55 MPH, i got home and let it idle, sprayed more carb cleaner and let it sit, then started it up again and drove it. WOW, it sounds and feels so good.

My old condenser was junk, the wire was exposed and was totally messed up looking all around. The points were horrible, they were absolute junk. Now that the timing is set and i have my distributor all good and the carb is clean, my car is running GREAT !

The only thing that's a little off is that when the choke is all the way in, it idles real low and when i rev it, it almost dies, so i have to run the car with the choke out a tiny tiny bit, but other then that it's awesome. Thanks for all the help, you guys rock, always helping me whenever i have a question or problem. Thank you thank you thank you !

i got a can of engine restore and lubricant with CSL.

That is the same issue my dad and I expierenced on our way home from the Minn. Falcon Nats. in 07. We rebuilt the carb and presto the problem was fixed. The best thing I can recommend to you is to pull the carb apart and clean it with carb cleaner so you can make sure there is nothing to clog the main jet.

i've been looking all over this forum and the classicinlines page and can not find anything pertaining to distributor point gabs !?!@#*#!? !!!

when i got a new condenser and points i found a page via google and found a forum that said to set a 170 engine's points to .25. I figured they meant 0.25 so i went ahead and set it to that. i'm having troubles and i'm trying to find that page again and can't, nor can i find anywhere on the web with any info on the subject. i don't have any fancy gauges or anything to set this, i just have feeler gauges.

can anyone help me figure out what i should set my points to ? Thank You.

Hi, I have a service manual for a 63 Falcon. The 170 ci engine with the manual trans gets set between .024 and .026. I'm sure yours is the same......

oh sweet so i did set that right, okay never mind. My problem is somewhere else. Thanks a lot !! i need to get me a service manual :hmmm:
