I just found a fairly nice 66 coupe with a straight 200, but the owner says its not been started in 3-4 years. its been kept in an open air shed. what is the best way to go about starting this engine--i know i need to change out the old gas, the owner says to put a teaspoon of oil in each spark plug opening first--but i just don't know and need your advice.

thanks, peggy

I heard oil too..

i also heard to crank it with the coil disconnected first to prime engine ...

but I WILL LET OTHERS ANSWER. THEY KNOW BETTER

BTW Welcome!

Change ALL fluids and filters, remove spark plugs before cranking and while the plugs are out, ground one to see if it's sparking, if it is, clean 'em put in and try to crank it. If it's not firring, replace all plugs, wires, cap, rotor and points. Good luck hope you're crusing soon :D

I just started one today at the yard. A 69 250...brought out a battery, and a squirt can of gas..

Pulled each plug, looked OK..pulled the dipstick..black but oil and no other weird stuff...opened the dizzy and sprayed in some WD40...also sprayed it around the carb linkeage...took off the air cleaner and checked inside the carb..found a spider web...put some 50/50 mix in the radiator

Hooked up a remote starter switch..and pulled the coil wire from the dizzy...starter sounded good..the motor turned...put the wire back..and put a coupla squirts in the carb and hooked the squirt bottle to the carb to bypass the tank...

Let her rip and she finally coughed to life. hoarsely....however after a few seconds the coolant leaked out a crack in the block behind the pump...not a good one.

I agree, check if you're getting spark. You might also try this. Take out the plugs and put a little ATF down the cylinders. It will lube enough for start up and then burn off quickly. Then, with the plugs still out you can ground the coil and crank the motor over for a little while. This will crank up the oil pump and get oil flowing through the motor again before it has to actually fire up.
