engine swap

I have a 65 comet with what I believe is a 170 six in it. I've been told that a 260 v8 would bolt right up to my bell housing ( I have a three speed auto in it) Does anyone know if this is possible? My engine has some blow by and I'm looking at my options. I'm going to do a compression check, does anyone know what the compression should be?

8) the highest cylinder should be with in 15-20lbs of the lowest cylinder. when you do your compression check, post the numbers up.

Here are the numbers

Dry 1 2 3 4 5 6
110 130 125 140 150 125

Wet 1 2 3 4 5 6
120 130 125 150 150 145

I an wondering if a ring and valve job would be in order or would it need a complete rebuild?

Those numbers aren't great but they're not terrible either; it will probably run a long time like that. Depends on just exactly what your intentions are for this engine; if just economical daily transportation then leave it, but I wouldn't do any sort of high-performance mods without freshening it up a bit.

8) i would say that this engine in not too bad of shape, but i would be planning a rebuild in the near future.

the engine wasn't warm. One thing that does bug me is the engine is quite noisy when I first start it up. After is runs for a few minutes if I rev it up a bit it quiets right down. Any suggestions as to what this could be? the oil pressure seems good.

I should also mention that the car will only see about 1000 miles a year thats why I thought just new rings and having the valves reground should give me a few years of good driving.

8) i think a fresh set of rings, bearings, valve job, and a new oil pump will do just fine. when you do the tear down, check the bearing clearances and see how big they are. if they are .0030 then you might consider getting a set of .001us bearings as well as a standard set if the crank has not been ground under size. and the crank will be marked if it has been reground.
