All Small Six exhaust sounds good is a v8 though, how would six sound?

This relates to all small sixes
I had an idea for the undividHeaders.JPGed port a while ago, but you would have to make it DIY. All dimensions are pipe diameters in mm. length is whatever is convenient. Ive never tried this as i went to the crossflow years ago.

I didn’t realize that was the reason it sounded like a V8 when it was idling
Your 6 with one deep tone in every 3, that's still an even pulsed variation, no six can ever sound as bad as a V8 in mismatched firing sequence, it's not physically possible.
To become conscious of individual engine's sound character, walk through the firing order. A Ford small6 pairs the middle cylinders. So a bigger port, and bigger pipe in the center, making a "deeper" tone than the other ports. So the sound is this: #1single (port), #5single, #3dual, #6single, #2single, #4dual.
So the tone the ear is hearing (very fast): light, light, DEEP, light, light, DEEP, repeat. So dividing the center port on this configuration will bring the sound closer to uniform.
Just as an example to compare: this Ford small6 port arrangement is the opposite of the tone produced by a Chevy6. The Chevy pairs ports 1&2, and 5&6. #3 and #4 are singles. So (think firing order)- the Chevy tone is DEEP, DEEP, light, DEEP, DEEP, light. In stock trim, the difference between the Chevy 6and small Ford 6 is totally unmistakable to a good ear. This is 95% due to the port design, and the necessary manifold to capture the exhaust. Mechanically every brand is following the same pattern, but they do not sound the same.
