Exhaust with some "flare" and donuts

Hello,

I have a 63 falcon with a stock 170 engine. I am putting on an all stainless 2" exhaust.

I was wondering 2 things:

1. Where can I get a flared stainless 2" end that I can weld on to the 2" pipe that I am running? It needs to fit the stock mainfold.

2. Is everyone running the donut syle seal on the manifold to exhaust pipe connection?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Pretty much any muffler place can make the flare for you. About the donut: it's better than the old flat style and that's what 90% of the manifolds run. The outlet hole was enlarged in '68 or so, so be aware of that. Try to get a fiber donut vs. metal because they seal better...that's about all I can think of.

Make sure of which type manifold you've got - early ones (up to '65??) used a flared pipe and a flat gasket, later ones used a straight pipe with a donut packing.

If you've got an early one, any muffler shop can flare a pipe.

Howdy All:

The small 1.75" outlet and flat gasket manifolds were used in 1960, '61 & '62. All exhaust manifolds after that were the 2" outlet with a donut type seal to the head pipe.

'65 & later manifolds were built heavier, ribbed and had more material in weak, crack prone areas. Beginning in '69 castings begin to take on extra bulges and bungs for emmissions related stuff that continued to worsen through to the end of production.

Thought you'd like to know.

the flat gasket ended in 62...63 and up has a doughnutz... most the after market ones you see for sale are C3 (63) codes... and abuilt thicker than stock... I have one on my 1960

The '65 (I guess) manifold I originally had was a donut seal but had a 1 3/4" hole. The later one I picked up (68 or 69) had a 2" hole, also a donut gasket. I was a little annoyed when I made the flared end to fit the donut gasket I got at the parts store (fit the original perfectly) and the gasket and pipe went all the way inside of the new manifold.

Yeah, my old one has a flare on the pipe, and the manifold has a tapered recess. Then a tapered insert (donut?) fits into both of them.

So it sounds like if I get the pipe flared and put a new donut (from falconparts.com?) in, it should work.

Do you think i will need to use smaller pipe than the 2" to do this, and then adapt up to the 2"?

So if I ever need to replace my manifold (1963.5, 170), use a '65-'68?

That is a correct assessment of the parts. I got a donut from the local parts house, they had about 20 different sizes. I think I used 1.75" for the headpipe, I really can't remember. It was several years ago. I did make it a slip fit into the rest of the exhaust so I could replace it though.
