Hello everyone, I'd just like to say that I greatly appreciate these forums for their vast knowledge that help out all of us. Well I have this question. I timed my '62 170cid, I unhooked the line for the vaccum advance and timed it TDC. I hooked the line back on, timed it, and it still read the same, when I accelerated I timed it again and it was right on the middle, so it went up! , I accelerated again and it seemed to stay in the same place. Is this normal? I think I can recall a time when I had checked everything and it jumped way up but I can't really remember. I am just learning so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or is it the vaccum advance? I tried to replace it but was told it is obsolete. Maybe a new distributor? I have the pertronix in it, the one that is meant for my year. I appreciate all and any help I can get. Thanks again. Edu.

You did plug the end of your vacuum line when it was removed, right?

The vac advance can be tested by removing it and sucking on the end of the hose fitting or hose. It should not leak at all. New parts are available, I believe - otherwise used ones are plentiful.

A Duraspark distributor may be made to fit by turning down the pilot diameter (just below the drive gear). This also requires a later (5/16") drive shaft for the oil pump and the post-1965 oil pump. Big benefit then is you have full electronic ignition which can be curved to suit modern fuels and driving.

Regards, Adam.
