Finally got my six running again

Ok well after alot of work i finally got to start up my six again. Now i'm in the process of tuning and breaking it in. So i was wondering about a few things. First of all is there a dwell amount you have found good, or should i stick with what the original specs were? Also what would be a good timing to set it too, I already got it idling, the damn thing took quite a few tries before it stopped coughing out of the carb but now it idles.

Also where did you guys put your carb return springs? I'm just wondering because right now on my stock autolite 1100 i have placed it on an exhaust bolt and it barely pulls the carb back to idle.

I just put in a DS2 distributor and I have about 12 degrees initial advance.
I also made a bracket for my return spring since there seemed no good place to put it.

my fairlane (which has the bellcrank style throttle) had the spring ran to the alt bracket. I used one from teh "help" ssection that had a long tail and was cut/bend to fit. worked great!

It seems 8-10 should be safe for sure and 12-14 range you have to be careful and aware to check for detonation. If your dizzy has been messed with all bets are off. If someone has put less advance in your dizzy you may be able to get away with more advance, if someone as put more in you may have to use less or un mod the dizzy back to stock. Are you running the Loadomattic? Unless you are going for an all orignal you may be better off going with a newer (non load o) dizzy because you get more flexability on what you can do with the curves. If your car is going to be a daily driver I would for sure go for and electronic ignition like the DS2 or DUI, if its just a low miles fair weather weekender and you know how to tinker with points you should be fine keeping the orignal.

I have never heard anyone really doing much with the dwell other than stock, just make sure you use a meter to do the final check and the reading is steady over differnt RPM ranges. It should be fairly steady even cranking and basically rock steady with the egnine running, if its not your dizzy cam or the bearings/shaft on the dizzy may be worn.

Thanks for the info, its a rebuilt distributor, so technically "brand new". When we went to start it, the timing was off at first because of the lack of room to screw in the screw causing it to offset when we screwed it in. My question about dwell was just to see if maybe there was a better setting for it *shrug*.

Also yeah, later i might get a pertronix upgrade, just because i am not doing it for huge performance or anything, just the ease of the upgrade. Right now i'm just working on getting it running decent enough, then driving it back to my house and finishing all the paperwork for it.

I'll take a picture of how my spring is, and then i'll show it to you guys in this thread. I should get a pic tonight, and maybe i will get work off tommorrow so i can work on it some more.
