I just bought a '65 2-dr hardtop coupe mustang. It has the 200 inline and C 4 automatic. I was wondering if I can, and how I would, add power steering and A/C to the car. I would also like to go to a larger motor and was wondering if anyone knew what all engines would fit without having to re-weld the motor mounts on. Also, if anyone knows of the cheapest place to get parts...my ears are wide open. Thanks.

Well...I've heard of people using later model fox body mustangs as power steering donors, I think somebody used an escort rack. Afew months back, I had a rack from a Mercury Topaz for sale; it's the same rack as the pre 92 Escorts.

HUH? motor mounts aren't welded to the I6 in mustangs to my knowledge. I just put mine back on and those use bolts. Two bolts attach the flange to the motor and the flange attaches to the mount. The mount attaches to the body via three bolts. Plus how big of an engine are you looking for? 250+, V8? If considering a V8, you've got a lot of work to do and a lot of spending to do. For starters, basically the whole under carriage has to be replaced. We're talkigng brakes, drivetrain, tranni, axles, wheels, etc... just to name a few. Much to consider on engine swapping. This has been a issue on the forums for a long time.

what I meant was I didn't want to have to relocate the mounts or weld onto the frame. My bad! I originally wanted to go for at least a 289, or (wishing) a late eighties, early nineties 5.0 and tranny, drivetrain etc. Since then I have decided to go to a big inline six. I am not completely sure but can almost swear that I was told the engines in the MA-50 Stewart-Stevenson Tugs used at the FedEx Memphis hub are Ford 302 inline sixes. So that motor is the one I would like. I am gonna have to start off cheaper and work my way up, but I still want my car to have a decent amount of power. I want to do a front disc brake conversion regardless. Thanks for the info (although I still need more). I guess it would really help if I wasn't stuck in Nashville, 210 miles away from the car!

Hi Hoss

Well, as for the steering, I don know...
But one source is, NPD (national parts depot),
for the AC system.
They have it for
65-66 6 cyl
65-66 8 cyl
same price, jus a few diff parts I think, the price is $895.00
They have those in
R 12 R134a

They say there isnt a fan shroud in the 65-66 6 cyl cause the 6 blade fan eliminates the need, um whaever.
It specifically states in the ad
"This system can be installed in cars that never had AC or cars that had it at one time."

As for changing engines, I think I still have a pair of engine brackets (these r what u attach to the beam at the base of the shock tower.) for converting from 6 cyl to V8, I bought em from them awhile back, never used em, the price in the book is $124.00 They fit 65-70 all sb V8s, big blocks must drill xtra hole.

The insualtors I bought were for a 351 windsor but I've decided to go w\ the lil 6 cyl so ... I don know which is closer, but the store # in the state where I live, toll free
1-800-368-6451 that ways u can call and inquire about all that, get a catalog etc...

U might could try Mustangs Unlimited, NPD and PAW, only thing is, PAW u have to buy their catalog, proly $5, but its over 1000 pages, it isnt Mustang specific parts, but there r some parts in there for it and jus about every other kind of vehicle...

Also dont forget about local parts stores for some things, like Advance, Autozone, NAPA etc, well for things like vavletrain, torque converters and other miscellaneous...

:!: For what it's worth, the UPS package cars do use a version of the 300 I6. A friend of mine who used to live in Nash-Vegas worked for UPS and bought the rebuilt engine from an 86'd package car and had it put into a '66 F100 pickup. But, if I remember correctly, that version of the 300 is meant to be mounted on a flat engine bay. Tom (my friend) knew a UPS mechanic that used to work for one of the NASCAR teams, so this guy had a pretty extensively outfitted shop. The engine mounts had to be fabricated, and even then they had to add frame braces and turnbuckles to the engine to keep it from torquing over when it started or was put under a load. It worked, and worked well, but I don't know if it would be worth it to do it yourself or pay to have it done. I'll see if Tom still has the truck--- maybe he can get some pictures.

I don't know if it'll fit your Mustang, but the power assist from a Maverick, '70s Comet, Granada, or Fairmont would probably work if the center link from the donor car is the right length for the Mustang. There're aftermarket power steering units, too, but they are expensive.
