first off hello to all i am glad i finally found a good forum for these vehicles. i am currently looking at buying a 1963 f100 that has a 59 bed on it. lowered, painted white with red scallops, steel wheels, sombrerro hubcaps, and white walls. anyways the owner drove it all over last year to shows then all of a sudden the fuel pump went out. thinking it was the carb he got a rebuilt and stuck it on. no good so he swaped to a holley blue elec pump with regulator. since then it will start but not idle at all. i e-mailed him this mornning to try and find out exactly what carb it is and go from there. he said currently he was trying 3 lbs but it still floods. now i noticed looking at the carb from straight on there is a large brass tube comming out the right side near the top of the carb (this is if you were facing the engine from the front) that is wide open. i am asumming this is a vac line for something and i would asume that it would mess with the way it runs. any ideas? oh it is a otherwise stock 223 that he said ran great before having fuel issues.

Welcome to the forum, sounds like a great looking truck, just my taste. You'll have to post some pics. One thing to keep in mind wiht these engines, is they are easy and affordable to maintain as well as very dependable. You just can't kill them. Don't let this problem hold you back from buying it. It's a minor probelm, I'm sure. The guys on this forum can talk you through some ideas. Where are you located?

i am in nor cal elk grove to be exact. i know these engines are hard to kill but i need to get this figured out so that my gf will feel more comfortable with me buying it lol. it is funny because the owner did all the chassis mods by himself but seems to know very little when it comes to the carb. what fuel pumps can i use on there because it sounds like i would be better off going back to the stock setup. now even with the stock pump should i use the fuel press regulator? oh and i do have a pic of it i will try to upload it.

I have one extra NEW single action fuel pump for the 223 I will sell for $20. If interested send e-mail to dk3456@hotmail.com. They cost 29.99 new from chain auto parts suppliers.

Also have a new dual action pump I just removed due to carb repeatedly flooding. A new dual action costs about $68.00 and U can get them at most vintage ford resto parts suppliers.

I am also setting my 223 up with another new (NOS) dual action fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, guage and waiting to receive my float chamber glass bowl for the holley 1904 carb. Keeping my fingers crossed that this will work.

hey welcoem to the forum. good ingfo here rom the right guys. it sounds like to me that there is a vacum line unplugged. it the line your talking about is on the passengers side of the carb. it's probably a vacumm line for the distributor. with that being said, your safest bet is to go back to stock pump and check the needle. sounds like somthing is preventing it from closing all the way. did he set up the carb? the float might be set wrong. good luck and welcome again.

from what he said it is a rebuilt carb that he just installed straight out of the box and is not even sure of what kind it actually is. the port i am talking about is on the driver side 90 degrees to the block. it is rather large in diamiter and currently wide open. i know it is not the fuel line so i would asume it is a vac port.

on the carb or intake? if it is on the intake, you need to plug it.is ther another hole bout the same size right next to it that goes up to the vavle cover?

no the outlet i am talking about is on the carb it's self. yes the breather hose is connected that runs from the intake manifold to the block. oh yea and what the heck is that thing that is on the side of the block that the breather hose comes out of? it is round and about 6 inches long. is there a check valve of some sort in there?
i talked to the owner yesterday and he said he got it running but it still will not idle not sure if he tried any of the things i suggested to him. i am just asumming that this is a 223 but from what i have read is it possible that there is a 262 in it? he is towing the truck to my place on fri night so i will take some pics of the carb so that you guys can try to figure this thing out.
