Ford 223 Rear main bearing help

Hi all,

I am working on a 223 out of a 1960 F100 and was trying to remove the crank. I was able to remove all of the main bearings with ease however the rear main bearing will not budge.

I have removed the bolts and have heated the block a bit but it will not even budge a mm.

Any suggestions for getting this thing out?

Thanks again

With the rear main cap bolts out, insert two as large as possible STRAIGHT pieces of shaft about 18 inches or more into the cap holes and pull them to the rear. If this does not work, have an assistant LIGHTLY tap the top of the bearing cap to the rear while pulling. The front of the crank can at the same time be carefully lifted out of the front bearing to increase the pressure on the rear main cap. BE CAREFUL: THIS IS A CAST CRANK AND IT IS BRITTLE. Then pull the pry bars toward the front of the engine and tap if necessary. DO NOT PRY OR HAMMER SO HARD THAT THE CAP IS CRACKED OR THE BOLT HOLES BROKEN OUT. A long pipe clamp can be used to pull the rear bearing cap forward by clamping between the cap and the front main saddle. The main cap side seals on these motors can really expand and lock the cap into the block. A few old time mechanics would shellac the caps in which would really lock them in. Good Luck
