I've been looking for a straight six "foxbody" Mustang for a while as a project. CL has a listing in the area for a '79 V6/Toploader notchback.

I'm considering it for retro fitting log 200. Any info on wether an earlier high mount 200 would be usable and the differnces in engine mounting appreciated.

How about 250?

Thanks

I would ask for pics to very the engine.
I haven't seen an early fox with a V6, but that doesn't mean they aren't out there.
My bet is that it's a straight six or a V8.

You'll be able to find an inline six kmember from someone who has done a swap to a V8.
The 250 would have to have an oil pan fabbed up as they were never put into fox-bodies.

Thanks for 250 info - verified it's a 2.8 V six (German ala Capri?) . I think straight six is extermely rare in NE, may be by DSO. 'like to find original 3.3 200 Fastback - with 3 pedals. He has 5.0 and T5 ready for it - nice but that's not where I'm going...

If you read the wikipedia for the Ford straight 6 it states:

"When Ford launched the third generation Fox body Mustang in 1979, the original engine line up included the Cologne V6. The same engine was also offered in the hugely successful Ford of Europe Capri Mk II. The 2.8L V6 engine was a popular option for the US Mustang and the European Capri MkII and as a result the Cologne engine plant could not meet the demand for engines for both Continents.

So, the Cologne 2.8L V6 was dropped from the engine lineup in the middle of the 1979 production year and replaced with the 200cid Falcon inline six, which was now referred to as the 3.3L engine. The engine and front suspension K-member was transferred from the Fairmont model which helped reduce costs instead of having to redesign the Mustang for a different engine."

So it probably has a 2.8L V6 instead of the inline. You can read it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Straight-6_engine

The Cologne V6 Mustang shares literally everything with the 4cyl model. If it had a TRX suspension package keep the front sway bar as I think that is the much sought after 1.12" model. Stock non-TRX was either .95" or 1.00" inches.

Stock 79 brakes are a tiny and ineffective 9.0" size. Even 87 and later stock 4cyl 10" brakes would be a major upgrade.

To swap to a inline six you need a Fox body inline six K-member. Everything else should bolt up like stock.

 Just get any Fairmont for parts. 9 times out of 10, it'll be an I6 powerband. 9/10 it'll be a C3.

Hi mount 3.3's fit Mustang Foxes with just the 78 to 83 Fairmont 3.3 x-member, and you can use the Mustangs Cologne V6 gearbox or the stock Fairmont gearbox. Each is the same 2.8 or 3.3 except for the bellhousing/flywheel/pressure plate. Ring gear is even the same...138 tooth because the US 3.3 used a German automatic gearbox.

If its auto, Fairmonts and Mustang 3.3's used the same C3 gearbox used behind 1974 to 1979.5 V6 Mustangs.
If its manual, the gearbox varied between the SR4 and SROD, but with the right bellhousing, it bolts to the 3.3.

Fairmonts/Cougars/Granadas/Mustangs/Capris generally ran high mount blue engines. Low mounts were powder gray and used a C4 gearbox. California spec were high mounts, but there were a bunch of low mount blocks used in automatic applications in 1981 Thunderbirds and some selected Lincoln Mercury Fox bodies. Cougars and some Capris.

The X-member just has elongated horns at the front to suit the I6.

All Fox 3.3 sumps were same, lots around!

Good luck, the old Fox is a lot of fun

Here in my neck of the woods C3s are rare and C4s are what we find.
The gray engines are low mount and have C5s, and I know SteveS in Cali had an '82 Cougar with a gray engine with a C5.

I posted original info request, THANKS for upgrading my Fox-six "knowledge base"....

PS: Never seen a straight six Fox/ Fairmont or 'Stang in this region . I have spare early engines I'd like to use (high mount starters, front sump ). Think I will have to wait to source the 3.3 crossmember and oil pan before proceeding...

Any further info appreciated

Thanks
